CNC Machinist

Position Summary

Set up and operate a variety of conventional and/or CNC machine tools to produce precision parts and/or instruments by applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. Verify product by inspection of precision parts to meet defined print specifications.

• Operate conventional or CNC machine tools such as lathes, boring mills, milling machines, grinding machines, or shapers.
• Read and interpret blueprints, program readouts, and technical directives to determine and obtain materials and cutting tools, visualizing the finished part and critical surfaces, dimensions, and tolerances.
• Complete basic machine set‑ups and follow detailed instructions regarding dimensions on blueprints, sequence of machine operations, machine feeds and speeds, tools to be used, alignment processes, and predetermined machined dimensions.
• Align parts in the machine, ensuring material, holding fixtures, and machine stops remain clear of chips and particles.
• Use machine operation knowledge to recognize defective tooling, improper coolant flow, and the need for changing speeds or feeds or to detect machine malfunctions; adjust the machine, cutting tool, or fixture or obtain assistance from a higher‑level machinist.
• Use measuring instruments such as internal and external micrometers, height and depth gauges, indicators, scales, and standard or preset snap, plug, bore, or ring gauges to achieve and maintain critical dimensions and tolerances during the machining process.
• Correct dimensional deviations by adjusting the machine, cutting tool, or fixture, or obtain assistance if necessary.
• Maintain dimensions using fixtures or preset machine stops when permitted by dimensional tolerances.
• Apply basic knowledge of trade mathematics.
• Perform documentation processing and procedures by following detailed instructions contained within relevant work instructions (WI), operations (OPS) or operational procedures (OPL).
• Requires supervision, guidance, and training as skills develop.

• Basic computer skills; knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is a plus.
• Meet daily/weekly production targets.

• Multi‑task and engage in work‑related activities to maximize productivity.
• Willingness to learn and participate in operations and development of equipment within the cell.
• Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives and 5‑S projects to support improved operations and cost reduction.
• Contribute ideas to reduce scrap and rework by participating in activities related to improvement in Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ).
• Willingness to work overtime and different shifts as needed to meet productivity requirements and customer expectations.

• General education level (minimum required not specified).
• Practice and follow the Gleason Business Philosophy (GBP) and be knowledgeable in the company’s ISO 9001 & 14001 targets, objectives, and goals.
• Learn, understand, and practice Lean Manufacturing principles within the facility.
