Veterinary Extern - General Practice

Externship Overview

An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give veterinary students the opportunity to understand day‑to‑day operations of the practice and gain hands‑on clinical experience. All NVA hospitals share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and exceptional service to animals and their owners.

Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to:

• Gather patient histories
• Perform physical exams
• Develop treatment plans
• Conduct diagnostics
• Provide dentistry services
• Observe, assist, or perform surgical procedures
• Manage medical care of patients
• Practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients

All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate. Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.

The stipend amount for Hinsdale Animal Hospital is $1,500. For details on the stipend program and amounts, refer to the program information.
