The Q‑NEXT National Quantum Information Science and Research Center based at Argonne National Laboratory invites applications for a postdoctoral position to conduct research in the field of experimental quantum communication hardware development, optical memory qubit characterization, and fiber‑based networking demonstrations using novel memory qubits. The goal is to employ the natural telecom optical transition and favorable spin properties of individual solid‑state erbium ions (Er3+) to store quantum information necessary for practical, robust, and scalable quantum communication.
The focus of this position is the continued development of a heterogeneously integrated node based on Er3+ coupled to high‑quality factor and low mode volume silicon nanophotonic cavities and to directly route single photons to/from the memory via optical fibers.
The candidate will be primarily responsible for: (1) advancing our experimental program to fabricate new hybrid devices in Argonne’s Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM) cleanroom facility, and (2) performing microwave and optical characterization of the heterogeneous devices using Q‑NEXT cryogenic capabilities to assess memory performance. A successful candidate would be part of a dynamic team working collaboratively with researchers in Q‑NEXT (both at Argonne and other member institutions) on both hardware development and network‑scale benchmarking of memory performance.
The candidate is expected to publish results in refereed journals and make oral presentations at meetings conferences, symposia, and seminars. The candidate is expected to maintain cognizance of available techniques and expertise in related research groups through interactions and collaborative efforts. The candidate will also participate in maintaining technical reports on experiment progress, technique development, and new initiatives to peer reviewers and Q‑NEXT program managers.
Position Requirements- Completed Ph.D. within the last 0‑5 years (or soon‑to‑be‑completed) in condensed matter physics, atomic physics, optical physics, electrical engineering, materials science, or a related field
- Experience in photonic and/or superconducting device nanofabrication
- Experience working with lasers and modulators as well as cryogenic systems
- Experience designing and building experimental control and data acquisition systems
- Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity and teamwork.
- Strong background in quantum emitter‑based defects, quantum networking, and quantum information science is preferred
- Experience with fiber device packaging is highly advantageous but not required
Questions about the position should be directed to Alan Dibos (adibos). Please note that only applications through Argonne’s website will be considered.
Applications must include an updated CV and will be reviewed upon receipt. Final position decisions are contingent upon receipt of three letters of recommendation. The position will remain open until filled.
