Research Scientist, Postdoctoral Research Fellow
The Materials Science Division (MSD) of Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral appointee in experimental condensed matter physics. Particular emphasis will be placed on dynamical studies of two‑dimensional (2D) materials and their functionalities.
Program OverviewThis postdoctoral position is supported by a DOE‑funded research program on ultrafast science involving Argonne National Laboratory, the University of Washington, and MIT. The program’s goal is to understand and harness nonequilibrium correlations among structural, charge, and spin/pseudo spin degrees of freedom in 2D materials, with the aim of controlling their electronic, magnetic, and optical properties on ultrafast timescales. Success of the program could enable new energy technologies.
Responsibilities- Conceive, plan, and implement scientific research in ultrafast dynamics of 2D materials.
- Conduct experimental characterization using terahertz, optical, and X‑ray ultrafast techniques, including synchrotron or FEL‑based X‑ray diffraction.
- Analyze and interpret complex data sets and report results in appropriate scientific venues.
- Lead tasks within a multidisciplinary research program and contribute to advancing the field.
- Engage independently and collaboratively with a world‑class scientific team.
- Ph.D. in condensed matter physics, materials science, or a closely related field.
- Strong background in ultrafast science, including time‑resolved microscopy or spectroscopy and scattering techniques for quantum materials.
- Experience with ultrafast X‑ray or electron scattering experiments is a plus.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to analyze complex data sets and work both independently and in collaborative teams.
