Overview
The Vehicle Technology Assessment (VTA) Group within the Vehicle and Mobility Systems department (VMS, vms.taps.anl.gov) at Argonne National Laboratory is looking for a postdoctoral appointee to assess vehicle technologies and quantify energy consumption, performance, and cost benefits.
Responsibilities- Perform vehicle modeling and simulation of advanced powertrains to quantify impacts of new component technologies, control algorithms, and powertrain architectures.
- Benchmark next‑generation vehicle systems and analyze opportunities for improvement at the individual, regional, and national levels.
- Assist in developing new projects under the supervision of senior researchers and work on current projects such as advanced vehicle technologies for light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles, hybrid, battery electric, and fuel cell powertrain design.
- Develop supervisory control logic and validate vehicle models against test data.
- Collaborate with industrial and academic partners and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Communicate results through presentations, journal articles, reports, conferences, workshops, and project meetings.
Position Requirements
- Recent or soon‑to‑be completed PhD (within the last 0‑5 years) in Engineering or a related program.
- At least 2years of experience with electrified powertrain (hybrid, battery electric, or fuel cell) system modeling and simulation.
- Demonstrated accomplishments in vehicle energy consumption assessment.
- Proficiency in simulation tools used for vehicle energy analysis, including Matlab, Simulink, Stateflow, and preferably Autonomie.
- Experience in data‑driven modeling, techno‑economic analysis, and publishing scientific findings.
- Strong problem‑solving, systems thinking, quantitative, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to structure and formulate solutions to complex problems and work independently as well as in a team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to present complex information to a broad audience.
- Computer skills for data manipulation and analysis, scripting in Matlab, Python, and R.

On‑site presence required at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois. Full‑time, long‑term (fixed term) appointment. Expected salary range: $72,879.00–$; comprehensive benefits included.
