Position: Deputy Associate Laboratory Director (Deputy ALD), Advanced Energy Technologies (AET)

Overview

Argonne National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy laboratory, delivers substantive impacts to U.S. prosperity, competitiveness, and security through transformative science and technology. The Advanced Energy Technologies (AET) directorate enables a reliable, secure, and prosperous energy future. AET is comprised of three divisions and several cross‑cutting initiatives focused on solving pressing energy, mobility, materials, and manufacturing challenges using world‑class scientific and engineering expertise and facilities.

The AET team collaborates with internal and external partners on cutting‑edge research, development, demonstration, and deployment of next‑generation energy technologies, with a portfolio supported by DOE and other federal agencies.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as spokesperson and representative of the ALD and directorate on research program matters, both internally and externally, as required.
  • Act as the technical lead for scientific and technical quality and risk across the organization, ensuring alignment and integration with strategic priorities.
  • Partner with the ALD to develop, coordinate, and articulate an energy strategy for Argonne, aligned with Laboratory and sponsor missions.
  • Work cooperatively with Division and Program Directors, Initiative Leads, Sponsor Relationship Managers, and Laboratory Scientists and Engineers to develop a strong knowledge of Laboratory capabilities and key sponsors’ priorities.
  • Lead the definition and development of strategic initiatives that expand capabilities and improve impact in support of sponsor mission priorities.
  • Steward and manage discretionary investments to execute the S&T strategy with positive outcomes.
  • Support lab‑level S&T planning activities, including the Annual Lab Plan and companion white papers.
  • Support strategy implementation and delivery of outcomes, including sponsor funding for research and S&T impact consistent with Laboratory and sponsor objectives.
  • Incubate S&T portfolio expansion opportunities, particularly in new/emerging domains, working collaboratively with key stakeholders to develop and execute new business capture and research implementation strategies.
  • Lead and facilitate bi‑annual strategy meetings with key stakeholders across the Laboratory.
  • Assemble and host an external advisory committee aligned with AET priorities annually.
  • Facilitate and sustain key sponsor and partner relationships, including DOE program offices, national laboratories, and industry partners.
  • Develop a deep understanding of sponsor missions and support identification of strategic priorities for sponsors, positioning Argonne and AET for maximum impact.
  • Mentor and develop future scientific leaders, promoting professional growth and excellence.

  • This role may evolve to include direct reports and supervisory responsibilities.
  • Position requires an on‑site presence at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois and will require relocation for out‑of‑state candidates.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s and 15+ years, Master’s and 12+ years, or Doctorate and 10+ years of relevant technology development/management experience with a demonstrated track record of strategy development and resulting impact/outcomes.
  • Strong scientific/technical background and demonstrated track record of strategy development/execution in scientific/technical fields.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with multidisciplinary teams including scientists and engineers.
  • Demonstrated ability to climb a learning curve in a new scientific or technical discipline to develop and execute a research strategy.
  • Knowledge of strategic planning concepts and frameworks, business activities, research methodology, general management, and financial analysis.
  • Creative strategic thinker with the ability to advise and influence various levels of management and scientific staff.
  • Ability to lead project teams and complex engagements; ability to motivate, develop, and coach teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
