About the Role

In the Computational Materials Group, we focus on the development and use of computational and theoretical methods to understand and predict the behavior of solids, liquids, and nanostructures from first principles at the atomic scale. We are seeking an assistant materials scientist to contribute to research on the properties of semiconductors and insulators for energy and quantum technology applications. The research includes developing methods and codes to study the interaction between materials and light, and investigating specific materials—particularly oxides—whose defective structures enable quantum technology uses such as sensing, communication, and electrochemical or photochemical processes relevant to energy applications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct theoretical and computational research using and developing codes for high‑performance platforms.
  • Collaborate with the experimental group to interpret results and contribute to experiment design.
  • Work independently and effectively collaborate within a highly interdisciplinary environment that includes materials scientists, physicists, and chemists.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, or a related discipline.
  • 2–4+ years of experience in first‑principles simulations of semiconductors and insulators.
  • Experience developing and using codes for large‑scale atomistic simulations.
  • Strong communication skills demonstrated through peer‑reviewed journal papers and conference presentations.
  • Ability to model and demonstrate alignment with Argonne’s core values:
Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.
Compensation and Benefits

The expected hiring range for this position is $94,486.00 – $. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as scope, responsibilities, qualifications, and market considerations. Additionally, a comprehensive benefits package is part of the total rewards.

Equal Opportunity

Argonne National Laboratory is an equal employment opportunity employer and is committed to a safe and welcoming workplace that fosters collaborative scientific discovery and innovation. Argonne encourages everyone to apply for employment and considers all qualified applicants without regard to any characteristic protected by law.
