Agronomy Operations & Maintenance Technician
Location:
Malden, IL
Full‑time, manual‑labor position.
Position OverviewThe role supports the efficient, safe, and effective daily operations of the cooperative’s agronomy department. Responsibilities include handling, blending, delivery, and application of fertilizers, crop protection products, and seed, as well as maintaining equipment, vehicles, and facilities to ensure operational readiness. The technician ensures compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities- Operational Support: blend, mix, load, and deliver fertilizers, crop protection products, and seed; operate tender trucks, sprayers, spreaders; perform routine maintenance and minor repairs; support inventory control and seasonal operations.
- Equipment & Facility Maintenance: perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on agronomy vehicles and equipment; conduct inspections; report repair needs.
- Product Application & Safety: handle, store, and dispose of chemicals in compliance with regulations; participate in safety meetings; maintain required licenses.
- Customer Service & Teamwork: provide courteous service to members and customers; coordinate deliveries; support other divisions during peak periods.
- Transportation & Licensing Compliance: operate vehicles safely in compliance with DOT; maintain valid CDL with tanker and hazmat endorsements.
- Other Duties: perform additional company and team efforts as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Agriculture, Plant Science, Biology, or related field (preferred).
- Prior agricultural, mechanical, or operations experience preferred but not required.
- Valid driver’s license (required).
- Illinois Pesticide Operator and Applicator license within 6 months of hire (required).
- CDL with tanker and hazmat endorsements within 2 years of hire (required; training assistance available).
- Basic understanding of agricultural products, fertilizers, and crop protection.
- Ability to operate, maintain, and perform minor repairs on heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of chemical handling, storage, and disposal regulations.
- Proficient in using smartphones, tablets, and computers for inventory tracking and SOP access.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and documentation skills.
- Ability to follow SOPs and maintain compliance with safety regulations.
- Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Collaborative teamwork across departments.
- Problem‑solving and decision‑making abilities.
- Adaptability to seasonal workload changes and varying weather.
- Ability to operate GPS and precision agriculture tools.
- Physical capability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and work outdoors in all weather.
- Commitment to safe work practices and hazard reporting.
- Willingness to obtain and maintain required licenses and certifications.
- Strong time management and prioritization skills.
- Indoor and outdoor work in varying temperatures, humidity, wind, and precipitation.
- Early mornings, evenings, or extended hours during peak periods.
- Exposure to agricultural products, chemicals, and related odors.
- Use of personal protective equipment when handling chemicals.
- Exposure to dust, pollen, and airborne particulates.
- Work near moving machinery and heavy equipment.
- Periodic exposure to loud noise.
- Uneven, wet, or slippery surfaces increasing slip/trip/fall risk.
- Entry into confined spaces or storage areas requiring permits.
- Handling and storage of hazardous materials in compliance with regulations.
- Travel between locations on rural or unpaved roads.
- Lift 50 lbs routinely; occasional lifting up to 100 lbs with assistance.
- Stand, walk, and move continuously for extended periods.
- Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching.
- Climb ladders and steps safely.
- Manual dexterity and hand‑eye coordination for precise tasks.
- Visual and hearing acuity for reading and communication.
- Wear and use required PPE.
- Work in varying weather conditions.
- Extend hours, weekends, holidays, and shifts during peak seasons.
