Job Overview
Position:
Community Service Officer (CSO)
Classification:
Security Officer, Title Series 11.260, UPD Southern Command.
Deployments may include the College of Southern Nevada, Desert Research Institute, Nevada State College, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campuses.
- Makes continuous radio communication and monitors traffic for pertinent information.
- Works independently without direct supervision, standing unassisted for extended periods.
- Assists with medical attention for individuals requiring CPR, defibrillation, or first aid (certified).
- Notifies UPD of all emergency situations (fire alarms, fights, disturbances, medical emergencies) and relays information to responding units.
- Provides walking safety escorts and assists with unlocks for authorized personnel locked out of spaces.
- Collects found property, secures or releases it properly.
- Assists other campus departments (e.g., Special Events, Vendor access) as needed.
- Completes walking foot patrols of buildings and grounds, checking for safety and security concerns.
- Submits work orders for observed issues needing repair such as light outages or damaged property.
- Checks emergency call boxes and assists with “jump starts” for disabled vehicles.
- Responds to non‑confrontational calls for service as directed.
- Engages with community members and participates in community outreach events.
- Observes, reports, and checks on the welfare of individuals.
- Prepares Incident Reports for property intake or incidents as requested.
- Reports any injury sustained while on duty.
- Perform other duties as assigned by a Supervisor or Superior Officer.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least two years of public contact experience, including application and implementation of rules, regulations, or established policies.
- Must pass a pre‑employment screening for controlled substances per NRS 284.4066.
- Valid driver’s license required at time of appointment and for ongoing employment.
- Must be certified in CPR and first aid at time of appointment.
- Strong customer service orientation.
- Excellent management, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to multitask, problem‑solve, and maintain confidentiality.
- May be required to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
- Must provide a criminal background check.
- Must demonstrate the ability to perform job‑related tasks (if required by NSHE).
- Grade 27, Step 1: $46,666.80 annually.
