Job Overview

Gilberts, IL (Population 9,075) is seeking an experienced and adaptable law enforcement professional to serve as the community’s next Chief of Police. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a collaborative leadership style, clear communication, and a commitment to modern policing practices and community engagement.

The Village of Gilberts is governed by a President and Board of Trustees. Policies are set by the President and Board, with the Village Administrator responsible for implementing them. The Chief of Police is appointed by the Village President with consent from the Board and reports to the Village Administrator.

• At least 15 years of law‑enforcement service, with a minimum of five years in supervisory/administrative roles at the command level of a full‑time, paid police department.
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university is desirable; coursework in public administration, business, finance, criminal justice, or a related field is preferred. A master’s degree is highly desirable.
• Leadership training from recognized programs (e.g., FBI National Academy, Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, Police Executive Research Forum, or equivalent) is required.
• Valid Illinois driver’s license and certification by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (or eligibility for such certification).

Salary: $165,000 (subject to qualifications, experience, and record of achievement). A comprehensive benefits package includes participation in a defined‑benefit pension fund (if eligible), a defined‑contribution plan, health insurance (medical, dental, vision, and availability for dependents), flexible spending accounts for medical and dependent care, and life insurance. The Village offers a generous leave package with paid vacation days, holidays, and paid time off.

Additional vehicle, cellphone, and $650 annual uniform allowance will be provided. The Village does not have a residency requirement.
