Universal Plant Services is seeking a Millwright Journeyman for the Lemont, IL nested site. Summary of Position
The Journeyman Millwright supports our nested refinery team in the maintenance, repair, installation, and troubleshooting of rotating equipment and mechanical systems. This role is part of a skilled team responsible for servicing critical refinery equipment, including pumps, fans, steam turbines, reciprocating compressors, gearboxes, and related components.
The ideal candidate will possess strong mechanical aptitude, general millwright and machinist skills, and experience working with precision measurement tools such as dial indicators, micrometers, calipers, last word indicators, and snap gauges. Experience with rotating equipment manufacturers such as Goulds, Sundyne, and Flowserve, including related seal systems, is preferred.
Additional experience in stainless steel tubing bending (¼” to 1″), basic machining (lathes, milling machines, surface grinders), and familiarity with alignment tools such as Rotalign is highly desirable. While not all skills are required, we value candidates with the right attitude, aptitude, and willingness to learn; training will be provided for the right individual.
This role requires a strong commitment to safety and the ability to work in demanding industrial environments, including refinery field conditions involving fresh air work, fall protection, confined space entry, working at heights, and exposure to varying weather conditions including heat, wind, and cold. Approximately 60–70% of the work is performed in the refinery, with the remainder supporting shop-based work.

- Participate in daily toolbox safety meetings.
- Comply with all safety rules and requirements, including the work permit and JSA requirements.
- Report all safety and quality incidents.
- Perform all work as directed in a safe, quality, and efficient manner.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Must have or be able to obtain a TWIC card.
- Compliance with UPS’ substance abuse policy.
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of three years in the millwright craft graduating from a US Department of Labor recognized apprenticeship.
- Minimum of five years of verifiable work in the millwright craft in an oil refining or petrochemical environment
- NCCER Level Four Millwright certification is a must.
- 5–10 years of experience with rotating equipment (pumps, steam turbines, reciprocating compressors, fin fans, gearboxes, etc.)
- 3–5 years of experience using precision measurement instruments
- 1–2 years of machinist experience (lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, etc.)
- Experience with pump repair and mechanical seal systems preferred
- Knowledge of Rotalign alignment tools is a plus
- Active TWIC card required (or ability to obtain during early stages of employment)

- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly, with heavier lifting assisted as needed.
- Ability to work at heights, climb ladders/scaffolding, and work in confined spaces while using required fall protection.
- Ability to perform repetitive mechanical tasks and use hand tools and precision measuring instruments.
