Maintenance Laborer

Job Overview

This position conducts maintenance, servicing, and inspection of all facility equipment and performs general facility maintenance at a fast-paced rail facility. The role requires a combination of mechanical troubleshooting, routine preventive maintenance, equipment repair, and participation in the company Safety Program.

• Fully participate in the company Safety Program and attend daily pre‑shift meetings.
• Perform all duties in compliance with OSHA, company safety, and environmental regulations; wear appropriate PPE.
• Conduct daily walk‑throughs of the facility and equipment, plan and prioritize tasks based on facility needs and supervisor input.
• Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance per manufacturer’s recommendations and company policies to maximize equipment life and reduce downtime.
• Troubleshoot reported or discovered equipment issues; repair or replace defective parts or request assistance as needed.
• Maintain necessary inventory to complete routine tasks and maintenance.
• Complete documentation accurately and legibly in a timely manner.
• Perform general housekeeping and clean‑up of all work areas.
• Utilize industry standards and research information to ensure regulatory compliance.
• Perform highly skilled maintenance tasks (e.g., electrical, fabrication, welding, cutting, blueprint reading, carpentry) when required.

• Education Required: High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent experience.

• Preferred: 1 year of experience working in an industrial environment with a dependable work record.
• License/Certification Preferred: Mechanical Maintenance Certificate.
• Intermediate to advanced understanding of mechanical maintenance, machine and tool knowledge, and repair techniques.
• Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
• Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
• Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
• Ability to accept and follow directions, apply common sense and logical thought processes to interpret communications, and recommend alternative solutions to mechanical problems.
• Ability to work well independently and within a team environment.

• Constantly or continuously balance, bend, stoop, twist, crouch, crawl, kneel, and squat.
• Climb stairs and ladders to significant heights frequently.
• Concentrate on tasks without becoming distracted.
• Enter information into a computer with observations and other data.
• Grasp, reach, lift, push, pull objects up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
• Use personal protective equipment as required.
• Pass required tests under FRA and DOT (where applicable).
• Work in confined spaces, on barge surfaces, and around railcars with tools such as vibrators.
• Work extended hours, weekend, holidays, and alternate shifts as needed.
• Work outside in extreme weather conditions and in high dust levels around grain and bulk products.
• Maintain arm/hand steadiness and multi‑limb coordination; use manual dexterity.
• Understand and communicate verbally and in writing; recognize emergency alarms.
