Designed by Steven Holl Architects and located at the corner of Broad and Belvidere, the Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA) at VCU presents the art of our time and provides an open forum for dialogue and collaboration across the region and throughout the world. With free admission, the ICA is a major resource for VCU, Richmond, and beyond.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Audio/Visual Technician

Institute for Contemporary Art

The Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA) at Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking qualified part-time Audio/Visual (A/V) Technicians to support the ICA's wide array of programs, events, and classes. This position requires baseline knowledge and interest versatility in lighting, sound, projection, video, streaming, and stage management. A/V Technicians act as an on-site point of contact for any event they are scheduled for, responsible for tracking, setup, operation, and breakdown of all necessary equipment.

A/V Technicians maintain a level head when troubleshooting and solving any technical issues that may arise during an event.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following disciplines: lighting, sound, projection, video, streaming, or performance
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work with visitors, clients, and other workers from all backgrounds
  • Must be able to proactively and creatively problem solve
  • Flexibility to work some nights and weekends
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe work environment; basic knowledge of fire safety, fall safety, and other hazards inherent to live performance venues.
  • Ability to work with equipment weighing up to 50lbs
  • Ability to work confidently on ladders, personnel lifts, and catwalks
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as an employee of VCU

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or the equivalent combination of education, technical training, and professional experience
  • Experience with pre-performance, performance, and post-performance activities
  • Experience with recording and post-production editing of audio and video
  • Experience with or Interest in working in a creative environment and/or with contemporary art
Salary Range:

$20/hour

This is an hourly (non-benefitted) position. Hours vary significantly due to the seasonal nature of programming. On average 5-15 hours/week.
