The Head Junior High Basketball Coach is responsible for leading, developing, and managing the junior high basketball program. This position requires fostering the athletic, academic, and personal growth of student‑athletes while promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, and a positive learning environment. The coach will plan and conduct practices, develop game strategies, instruct players on fundamental and advanced basketball skills, and ensure player safety and well‑being.
Additionally, the coach is expected to model professionalism, communicate effectively with athletes, parents, and staff, and support the overall mission and values of the school and athletic department.
Athletic Director, and/or Building Administrator as appropriate
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Plan, organize, and conduct daily practices that build fundamental and advanced basketball skills.
- Develop and implement game strategies that promote teamwork, sportsmanship, and competitive success.
- Teach student‑athletes the rules, techniques, and values of basketball in alignment with school and athletic department expectations.
- Supervise and ensure the safety of all players during practices, games, travel, and related activities.
- Model and instill discipline, respect, and positive character development in student‑athletes.
- Collaborate with the Athletic Director, school staff, and other coaches to support the overall athletic program.
- Maintain open, professional communication with players, parents, and staff regarding team expectations, schedules, and progress.
- Manage equipment and uniforms, ensuring proper care, distribution, and return.
- Uphold academic standards by encouraging student‑athletes to prioritize their education.
- Instructs, explains and enforces health and safety rules and regulations.
- Assess the athletic team skills and opponents’ capabilities and determine game strategies.
- May participate or coordinate opponent scouting activities.
- Communicates with school and community stakeholders including media and press.
- Complies strictly with IESA/IHSA/NFHS rules and guidelines including but not limited to rules regarding sportsmanship, recruiting, and the safety of students at all times.
- Maintains confidentiality.

- Credential: Possession of all appropriate credentials in accordance with school code and relevant sports associations, professional educator license and valid Illinois driver’s license.
- Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade required;
Bachelor’s degree preferred. - Experience: Any combination of experiences and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skill for the position. Successful experience as an interscholastic coach preferred.

- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 45 pounds and frequently lift and/or move more than 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
