Position: Demand Response Driver - $3,500 Sign on Bonus!
Location: Pontoon Beach

Description

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires public transit systems to provide "Paratransit" services. It must be available in the same service area and during the same hours of operation as the rest of the transit system. Paratransit provides transportation for people who are unable to use the fixed route bus due to a disability. ACT also provides Demand Response service to elderly individuals who reside in Madison County on a space available basis.

Each rider category must register and qualify prior to riding the bus.

The primary function of the ACT Demand Response Bus Driver is to safely operate buses utilizing various routes while following the schedule for picking up and dropping off the designated passengers for each day. Safety and courtesy are of the utmost importance while transporting customers to and from their prearranged origins and destinations. The Driver performs this function in compliance with all Agency policies and procedures.

$24/hr Starting Pay

$25.72+/hr After Probation

$30.26/hr Top Pay

$3,500 Sign on bonus paid according to schedule.

Essential Functions include but are not limited to:
  • Attends work on a regular and dependable basis.
  • Performs pre-trip vehicle inspections (e.g., checking oil, opening wheelchair lift doors, manually lowering the lift platform, walking around the entire perimeter of the bus to check lights, leaks, suspension, etc.) per DOT requirements.
  • Operates a Demand Response bus on a schedule, safely picking up and discharging passengers. Notifies base of any discrepancies.
  • Properly records fare collection and tracks the fare on an ongoing basis throughout the day.
  • Aides disabled passengers into and out of vehicle by operating wheelchair lifts or ramps. Kneels to secure wheelchairs to restraining devices for stabilization during trip.
  • Promotes positive passenger relations by greeting passengers in a pleasant and courteous manner.
  • Makes suggestions to supervisor on safety improvements; reports observed accidents, hazards, and other circumstances requiring attention to dispatcher.
  • Controls passenger activities on the bus (e.g., eating, drinking, smoking, misconduct) with tact. Timely and accurately prepares written reports on such misconduct or incidents according to company policy and procedure.
  • Regulates heating, lighting, cooling, and ventilating system for passenger comfort.
  • Operates two-way radio system in accordance with established company rules and regulations to communicate with base information relevant to the safe and prompt movement of the transit vehicle (e.g., reporting disruption of service such as vehicle accidents, street closures, mechanical problems).
  • Adheres to all standards of company uniform dress code and grooming.
  • Stays current on latest practices as applicable to the Agency's needs including proper safety practices.
  • Is aware of the potential safety and security factors throughout the transit facility and to follow all applicable policies and procedures of the Agency. Responsible to report any known or potential safety and/or security factor immediately to an appropriate supervisor, including any employee not following the policies and/or safety procedures.

Requirements
  • High School education or equivalent.
  • Must be able to obtain a valid IL Commercial Drivers License Class C with passenger endorsement.
  • Two years' customer service experience.
  • Must be able to work independently without constant supervision.
  • Must be skilled in reading and understanding written and oral instructions.
  • Clean and neat appearance.
  • Must be able to read and follow a map.
  • Knowledge of county street network
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Normal working conditions for this position are in an outside environment working in all types of weather conditions. Shifts vary from 4:00 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. Sunday through Saturday. Capacity to work beyond standard hours when needed to address critical needs.

Physical requirements of the position include full range of motion in all extremities. Operators must be able to sit 85% of an 8-to-10-hour workday in a seat fastened with a seat belt, able to stoop, kneel, climb steps, crouch, push and pull. Must be able to pass Department of Transportation physical exam and drug screen.
