Summary of Position
A Yard Associate is responsible for ensuring prompt and courteous service to every customer of R.P. Lumber Co., maintaining safety, accountability, and cleanliness at their location. The role includes proper storage of products and maintenance of equipment, participation in delivery operations, accurate tracking of product movement in and out of the yard, building delivery loads, and assisting with unloading and stocking of shingles, drywall, lumber, millwork, and other products.
The direct supervisor of a Yard Associate is the Yard Manager.
- Greet customers or professional contractors upon entry into the yard or Home Retail Center.
- Load materials into customers' vehicles or onto company delivery vehicles, verifying type and quantity against the point‑of‑sale record.
- Unload incoming freight, protecting goods and carrier equipment.
- Operate forklift to merchandise and stock yard and warehouse.
- Accurately build loads and prepare materials for delivery before outbound transport.
- Assist truck drivers in delivering merchandise to homeowners and job sites using company equipment.
- Respond to customer inquiries regarding product selection, order placement, pricing, scheduling, and follow‑ups.
- Maintain inventory, product displays, and pricing labels, ensuring merchandising standards are met through stocking, facing, straightening, and cleaning.
- Enforce all safety rules and policies communicated by management.
- Perform other assigned duties and responsibilities as requested by the Yard Manager.
- Forklift experience preferred; training provided.
- Follow safety expectations set by company policies for material handling and transport.
- Knowledge of building materials and industry desired but not required.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for interaction with vendors, customers, management, and team members.
- Ability to understand and execute simple instructions.
- Professional customer service orientation and teamwork ability.
- High school diploma or GED.
- One year of related work experience preferred.
- Valid state‑issued driver’s license;
Missouri locations require a Class E license. - Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
- Flexible for working weekends and holidays.
- Successful applicants will undergo pre‑employment drug testing, background check, and driver history checks as required by law.
- Sitting, standing, bending, and walking throughout the day.
- Ability to bend, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift or move 50‑100 pounds frequently.
- Tolerance of adverse weather conditions.
$15 - $20 (Hourly Rate)
- Potential pay rate based upon region, experience, education, licenses and certifications.
