Public Accounts Auditor I | Commonwealth of Kentucky The Tone
This is a full-time role within the Executive Branch of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, with a hybrid work model primarily located in Daviess, Hopkins, McLean, Webster, and Henderson Counties, USA. The Auditor of Public Accounts is an independent agency responsible for performing audits of state and local governments across Kentucky. This role ensures public resources are protected, accurately valued, properly accounted for, and effectively employed to enhance the quality of life for Kentucky citizens.

- Team:
Office of Local Government Audits Local Branch A, working under direct supervision. - Mission:
To perform beginning level audit procedures to help ensure public resources are protected, accurately valued, and properly accounted for. - Tech Stack:
Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel
- Conduct Audits:
Perform beginning level procedures primarily on fiscal court and county official audits, including those for county clerks and sheriffs, within a specified region of the state. - Financial Review:
Contribute to the annual financial statement audits of state agencies as part of the Commonwealth of Kentucky's overall audit process. - Investigation & Review:
Assist with special examinations into waste, fraud, and abuse, and conduct reviews of various entities that receive public funds, ranging from large state agencies to city governments or local fire departments. - Work Paper Preparation:
Gain experience in preparing electronic work papers that accurately document audit findings and procedures. - Professional Development:
Learn and apply fundamental techniques and principles related to governmental accounting, state and local accounting systems, and governmental auditing standards, while also developing skills in interviewing and audit comment development.
- Background:
Hold an entry-level professional qualification, demonstrated by a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. This degree must include a minimum of twenty semester hours or thirty quarter hours in accounting to meet the core domain knowledge requirement. - Experience:
No prior professional work experience is required for this classification, as comprehensive training will be provided on the job. However, candidates must possess and maintain a valid driver's license for employment, and be prepared for routine travel to various work sites for on-site audit procedures and training. - Skills:
Exhibit strong oral and written communication abilities, demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, possess strong analytical and organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail, and apply critical and creative thinking to problem-solve effectively. - Bonus:
Show self-motivation and initiative to follow through with assigned tasks and meet established time frames with minimum supervision. The ideal candidate will also effectively collaborate within a team, be receptive to peer and supervisor feedback, exercise sound judgment, and consistently maintain confidentiality.
