Position Summary

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a field‑based scientist who serves as an extension of the Medical Affairs organization. The MSL establishes and enhances professional relationships with medical thought leaders, participates in clinical trials, and provides scientific support for Phathom’s products. The role requires 30–50% travel and the ability to drive within an assigned territory.

Key Responsibilities
  • Identify, develop, and maintain collaborative relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and healthcare stakeholders in Phathom’s therapeutic areas.
  • Provide clinical presentations and respond to unsolicited medical questions in academic, community, and provider settings.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical organization to enhance patient enrollment in Phathom‑sponsored clinical trials and support investigator‑initiated research.
  • Develop and execute territory plans aligned with strategic regional and national actions.
  • Gather and share insights from KOLs, HCPs, and investigators with cross‑functional stakeholders.
  • Represent Phathom at medical congresses and other scientific events.
  • Travel extensively by automobile (and where required, by airplane) across a broad geography.
Organizational Impact
  • Develop a deep understanding of KOL needs and successfully network within the pharmaceutical/biopharma industry.
  • Analyze data and identify opportunities for research and innovation.
  • Establish and maintain effective internal and external relationships.
  • Align with MSL team strategy considering evolving industry and competitive landscapes.
Scientific and Technical Expertise
  • Expert knowledge of Phathom products, competitive products, and GI therapeutic algorithms.
  • Critical analysis of trial designs and provision of constructive feedback.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Flexibility to apply scientific knowledge to secondary pipeline areas.
Teamwork and Influence
  • Facilitate open exchange of information and viewpoints.
  • Deliver impactful presentations and negotiate cross‑functional solutions.
  • Demonstrate emotional intelligence and adaptability.
Accountabilities
  • Provide accurate scientific information to healthcare professionals.
  • Respond to unsolicited medical information requests.
  • Maintain strong relationships with KOLs.
  • Develop expertise in clinical practice of acid‑related GI disorders and field insights.
  • Strategically plan and execute region‑level medical initiatives.
  • Support educational meetings focused on acid‑related GI disorders.

States included: MI, KY, OH, IN

Requirements
  • Advanced degree in life sciences (MD, PharmD, PhD, DNP, PA‑C, MSN) required.
  • Prior or current participation in a Medical Affairs Fellowship or Internship preferred; MSL experience preferred.
  • Experience in pharmaceutical medical affairs or as a healthcare provider strongly preferred.
  • Product launch experience preferred.
  • Therapeutic area experience in GI preferred.
  • Knowledge of PhRMA, AGA, and related guidelines.
  • Understanding of the clinical development process and ICH‑GCP guidelines.
  • Ability to maintain scientific credibility while supporting commercial goals.
  • Customer‑centric, goal‑focused, collaborative, and flexible.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proven team‑player who engenders credibility internally and externally.
