Kohl & Cook is a growing Ohio civil litigation law firm with offices serving the Dayton, Centerville, Columbus, and Central Ohio communities. Our attorneys represent consumers, homeowners, small businesses, and individuals in matters involving a wide range of civil issues, including consumer protection, real estate disputes, foreclosure defense, construction litigation, contract disputes, and other complex civil litigation matters. We are seeking an experienced Civil Litigation Paralegal to support our expanding practice and help deliver exceptional client service throughout Ohio.

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Civil Litigation Paralegal who is comfortable working independently in a fast-paced and varied litigation practice. This role will support attorneys throughout all stages of litigation, from intake to resolution. Responsibilities include drafting and editing legal documents, managing case files, conducting legal research, coordinating with clients and witnesses, and assisting with trial and hearing preparation. This is a hands-on position that requires both independent judgment and the ability to follow established procedures.

Strong organizational skills, computer literacy, familiarity with online court dockets, and knowledge of court rules and procedures are essential. The ideal candidate is proactive, exercises sound judgment, adapts to different attorney work styles, and responds constructively to feedback and changing priorities. Key Responsibilities
  • Managing attorney calendars and case files, tracking deadlines, and ensuring timely filings.
  • Drafting, editing, and formatting legal documents, such as pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses, affidavits, and other documents, for review by attorneys.
  • Accurately filing legal documents in Federal and State courts.
  • Organizing and archiving evidence and other documents in active cases according to the firm’s naming conventions and document management practices.
  • Professionally communicating with clients, colleagues, counsel, and court personnel via phone, email, and in person.
  • Assisting attorneys with preparation for various proceedings, including preparing exhibit binders and coordinating with witnesses for depositions, hearings, and trials.
  • Maintaining records regarding billable hours spent on specific cases.
  • Assisting the office manager in the administrative operations of the firm and Columbus office.
  • Managing multiple projects and following up to ensure deadlines are met.
Education And Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3+ years of paralegal or legal assistant experience, ideally in civil litigation.
  • Associate degree in paralegal studies, post-degree paralegal certificate, or equivalent required.
  • Strong technical and computer skills to include MS Office Suite:
    Outlook, Word, Excel; PDF editing applications; and strong Internet research skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • E-filing proficiency in Ohio state courts.
  • Excellent proofreading skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Outstanding time-management and organizational skills.
  • Professional and positive team attitude.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize projects as needed.
