ABOUT THE NEXT STEP

The Next Step (TNS) is a St. Louis-based nonprofit organization founded in 2005. Our mission is to provide tuition assistance to individuals active in a 12-step recovery program from substance use disorder who demonstrate financial need and are pursuing academic or vocational education. We serve students across the St. Louis and Kansas City regions and have been changing lives through education for over 20 years.

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are growing and looking for someone to join our team as Program and Operations Coordinator. This is a newly created role designed to strengthen our internal operations and scholarship program.

This position provides day-to-day operational and program support across The Next Step. Reporting to the Senior Director, this role serves as the organization’s primary operational back-up on scholarship functions, learning and supporting core program processes, while also assisting with general operations, events, board logistics, and development.

This is a growth-oriented role designed to build a working knowledge of the organization so our scholarship program can continue to grow.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
  • Support scholarship application intake, interviews, and applicant communications
  • Maintain applicant and recipient records in database systems, develop reports
  • Assist with scholarship disbursements and program financials
  • Support development of an alumni and outcome tracking program
  • Student volunteer coordination for community events
  • Serve as back-up support to the Operations Lead on all scholarship functions
OPERATIONS
  • Maintain an organized, professional office environment, including storage systems, supply ordering, and general office upkeep
  • Handle mail, vendor coordination, and the general admin inbox
  • Support board and staff meeting logistics, including scheduling and minute-taking
  • Manage and update Notion project management system, keeping tasks and timelines current
  • Assist with financial recordkeeping and data entry in Quick Books
  • Special projects as needed
DEVELOPMENT
  • Provide operational support for fundraising, donor stewardship, and marketing
  • Support donor acknowledgments and stewardship follow-up, donor meeting coordination
  • Assist with Annual Scholarship Gala and community events
  • Data entry and maintenance of donor database
  • Monitor social media accounts and online inquiries
  • Inventory and ordering of promotional items
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
  • Commitment to The Next Step’s mission and knowledge of 12-step recovery programs
  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to manage multiple, detail-oriented workflows
  • Clear, professional written and verbal communications and willingness to make phone calls
  • Experience working with and learning software systems (Zengine, Bloomerang, Notion, Quick Books). Prior experience a plus but not required, ability to learn quickly is required.
  • Discretion with handling sensitive applicant, donor, and financial information
  • Comfort working independently and managing your own priorities in a small office
  • Prior experience working for a nonprofit is preferred

POSITION DETAILS

Location:

Hybrid, Saint Louis, MO

Hours:

Full-time, 40 hours per week, some evenings and weekends required

Salary: $25 per hour, commensurate with experience
