Job Overview

The Custodian ensures the school environment is clean, safe, and attractive for all students and staff.

Job Responsibilities Classroom Cleaning Duties - Daily

• Empty wastebaskets and pencil sharpeners
• Sanitize sinks and drinking fountains (if applicable)
• Cleans restrooms (if applicable, using restroom procedures)
• Dust window ledges, bookcases, and chalk trays
• Refill dispensers (if applicable)
• Replace burned‑out light bulbs or tubes
• Dust mop tile floors or vacuum all carpeted areas
• Spot mop if needed
• Set blinds or curtains and close windows
• Cleans classroom door glass

Classroom Cleaning Duties - Weekly

• Clean blackboards, erasers, and dry board
• Dust blinds and light fixtures
• Clean all furniture and equipment
• Dust high and low corners for cobwebs
• Wet mop if needed
• Inspect parking lots and grounds at least three (3) times per week for cleanliness and security

Classroom Cleaning Duties - As Needed

• Dust transom ledge and wash transom glass
• Light scrubbing and waxing
• Wash windows
• Edge all carpet
• Buff floor
• Wash out all wastebaskets

Corridor/Entrance/Lobbies Cleaning Duties - Daily

• Sweep corridors adjacent to classrooms
• Empty wastebaskets in corridor lockers
• Remove marks from walls and lockers
• Sanitize drinking fountains, including wall area around fountains
• Vacuum carpet and entry mats
• Wash entry door glass
• Spot mop
• Replace burned‑out lights
• Clean handrails

Corridor/Entrance/Lobbies Cleaning Duties - Weekly

• Wash trash receptacles in corridor lockers
• High and low dusting
• Wet mop

Corridor/Entrance/Lobbies Cleaning Duties - As Needed

• Buff and refinishes floors

Restroom/Locker Room Cleaning Duties - Daily

• Empty all trash containers and sanitary napkin receptacles
• Fill all dispensers (towel, tissue, soap, and napkins)
• Sweep floors
• Cleans mirrors, walls, stalls, shelves, and doors
• Clean and disinfect urinals and stools
• Clean and sanitize all sinks and piping
• Clean and disinfect all stool lids, top and bottom, and leave up to dry
• Replace all lights that are burned out
• Mop all floors
• Dust top of lockers, window ledges, and stalls
• Clean and sanitize shower piping and soap dish
• In case of damage or vandalism, clean the restroom and lock the door, reporting any damage to the Head Custodian. The Head Custodian will unlock the restroom when the problem is resolved

Restroom/Locker Room Cleaning Duties - Weekly

• Dust light fixtures, vents, stalls, and walls
• Wash partitions with a disinfectant cleaner
• Wash all wastebaskets and sanitary napkin receptacles
• Dust corners for cobwebs

Restroom/Locker Room Cleaning Duties - As Needed

• Strip and refinishes floor

Office/Teacher Work Room Cleaning Duties - Daily

• Empty all wastebaskets
• Dust all furniture, window ledges, counters, and bookcases
• Cleans glass on desks, doors, office windows, and transoms
• Cleans and sanitizes restrooms (using restroom procedures)
• Sweeps all floors

Office/Teacher Work Room Cleaning Duties - Weekly

• Dust light fixtures, blinds
• Wet mop

Office/Teacher Work Room Cleaning Duties - As Needed

• Light scrub and re‑wax floors

Gymnasium/All Purpose Room Cleaning Duties - Daily

• Sweeps floor
• Cleans and sanitizes drinking fountains
• Dusts bleachers, cleans behind bleachers
• Cleans door glass
• Spot mops as needed

Auditorium Cleaning Duties - Daily

• Empties all trash containers
• Cleans carpet
• Spot mops where needed
• Sweeps floors as needed (under seats also)
• Cleans steps and dust ledges

General Duties - As Needed

• Sets up before and after special events, e.g., basketball, volleyball, banquets, PTA meetings, staff meetings, etc.
• Snow removal, lawn care
• Assembles furniture
• Unloads school supplies from delivery trucks
• Secures building
• Reports problems to Head Custodian or supervisor
• Other duties as assigned

Inventory and Maintenance of Supplies

• Have knowledge of supplies stored in custodial closet
• Maintains adequate amount of supplies in custodial closet
• Organizes and keeps custodial closet clean
• Maintains proper working condition of mops and mop bucket, wringer, dust mops, and trash containers

Summer Cleaning

• Duty as assigned by the Head Custodian, Facilities Department supervisors, or Principal
• Summer duties as assigned

On‑Call Duties

• Requires being “on call” during weekends, nights and holidays for emergency repairs and alarm calls
