Job Summary Breakdown – Surgery RN

Discipline: Surgery (Operating Room)

Monthly Case Volume: ~500 cases/month

EMR System: Meditech

Patient Ratio: 1:1

Unit Overview
  • Beds: 10 OR beds/rooms
  • Total Staff: ~50
  • High-acuity OR setting with trauma designation
  • Complex multi-specialty surgical environment
Staffing Model

Day Shift:

  • 10 RNs (Circulating Nurses)
  • 10–14 Scrub Techs

Night Shift:

  • 1 RN
  • 1 Scrub Tech

Weekend Requirement:

  • Must independently run 2 OR rooms
Case Mix / Equipment Exposure

Strong multi-specialty surgical exposure including:

  • Orthopedics
  • Neuro surgery
  • Trauma cases (in-house trauma coverage required)
  • DaVinci robotic surgery
  • General laparoscopic procedures
  • Urology (GU)
  • Cardiac / Heart procedures
  • Endovascular cases
Must-Have Skills

Candidates will NOT be considered without:

  • Minimum 2+ years circulating RN experience
  • Strong expertise in:
    • Ortho surgery
    • Neuro surgery
    • Trauma cases
  • Ability to independently circulate complex cases
  • Experience running multiple OR rooms simultaneously (weekends)
Weekly Hours Estimate

Based on staffing model and OR volume:

  • Typical OR operations: 5–6 days/week
  • Shift structure (assumed 10-hour OR shifts common in Surgery units)
Estimated Weekly RN Hours
  • Standard full-time RN schedule:
    36–40 hours/week
  • Weekend coverage requirement + trauma in-house coverage may increase flexibility needs
Practical Breakdown
  • Core weekly assignment: ~36 hours (3x12 or 4x10 shifts equivalent)
  • Potential overtime/on-call exposure: 4–8 additional hours/week (based on trauma/case volume spikes)

Total expected workload range: 36–44 hours/week (with occasional higher demand during trauma-heavy weeks)
