Responsibilities
  • Perform major and minor preventative maintenance service on state vehicles and equipment; diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic problems; operate diagnostic tools and computer software; weld and fabricate.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work environment; inspect and test equipment for safety and proper working order.
  • Complete paperwork and assist in writing specifications; maintain workplace inventory; order parts and supplies to maintain an inventory of parts.
  • Adequately explain technical diagnoses and needed repairs to non‑mechanical personnel including employees and customers on an as‑required basis while performing roadside assistance, towing needs, and rollback services.
  • Perform duties of supervisor as directed; report to work outside of normal working hours for emergency operations.
  • Supervise a repair facility; review the work of specialists; provide training and assistance in the analysis of engine malfunctions and decisions concerning repair or replacement of parts.
  • Plan, layout, and direct operations of a repair facility within the agency's responsibilities; prepare project schedules; consult with engineering and other departments to obtain information on work priorities and to provide availability of proper equipment for scheduled activities.
  • Perform transportation planning functions; determine existing and future service levels, accruing needs, and relate to projected revenues; coordinate meetings with other units to evaluate fleet and equipment needs.
  • Perform necessary research, investigation, analysis, and reporting for the equipment fleet; make recommendations for purchase, replacement, or re‑assignment of equipment within a division; write preliminary specifications for equipment.
  • Manage and/or develop budgets for an assigned unit including operating requirements, equipment purchases, parts and supply purchases and ensure that actual expenses are consistent with the approved budget.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies

Knowledge of mechanical trade tools, equipment and terminology; diagnosing problems with light and heavy‑duty equipment; understanding of internal combustion engines; drive systems and other systems in various types of vehicles and equipment; parts‑ordering procedures; repair costs. Ability to use diagnostic tools; read service manuals and schematics; perform advanced and technical repairs; use welding equipment; direct work of mechanics and helpers; use highly technical diagnostic tools such as lab scopes, scanners and computer software.

Education

& Experience

Level II:
Two years of experience in automobile, truck, light or heavy‑duty road equipment, combustion engines or chassis maintenance and repair; or equivalent combination with one year of education/training as an Automotive/Diesel Mechanic.

Level III:
Three years of experience in automobile, truck, light or heavy‑duty road equipment, combustion engines or chassis maintenance and repair; or equivalent combination with one year of education/training as an Automotive/Diesel Mechanic.

Special Requirements
  • Valid Oklahoma driver’s license required at time of appointment.
  • Possession of a valid Oklahoma commercial driver’s license, class A or B with required endorsements may be required.
  • Applicants must pass a drug test prior to appointment; a physical examination may be required based on agency.
  • Required certifications:
    Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning (MVAC) refrigerant certification within 12 months; compressed natural gas (CNG) certification may be required within 12 months; alternative fuels certification may be required for certain levels.
