Material Handler
Under the supervision of the Environmental Sustainability Director, provide materials management support for Eaton County’s Department of Resource Recovery. Materials management support includes operating the department’s Mobile Recycling Program (MRP) throughout rural communities in the County. The MRP collects recyclable materials (plastic, metal, glass, paper, cardboard, batteries, and more) for processing at the Sunfield Recycling Center. This position will be baling and managing materials at the Sunfield Recycling Center with the Resource Recovery team.
Additionally, this position supports waste recovery and data collection efforts, including county-wide events. No prior recycling knowledge is required for this position.
Starting pay is dependent on an applicant's relevant experience.

Responsibilities- Assist in the Mobile Recycling Program (MRP) for rural communities, traveling weekly with staff and the recycling trailer to Eaton County communities.
- Assist and educate community members about recycling and source separation of materials and provide support through the recycling trailer.
- Manage recyclable materials at the Sunfield Recycling Center: unload the recycling trailer, sort recycling materials to the proper location, inventory, move and organize recyclable materials, and bale materials for shipment to manufacturers and brokers.
- Assist in data collection and reporting, compiling and communicating materials data to the Environmental Sustainability Director.
- Communicate with members of the public, community stakeholders, volunteers, and employees in a positive manner, using active listening to maintain respect and patience while serving the County.
- Assist with organizing various events, moving materials, tables, displays, and related tasks.
- Occasionally work evenings or weekends to assist with events and special projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience- High school graduation or its equivalent. Advanced coursework or previous work experience in logistics, warehousing, environmental science, waste management, communication, education, and related areas is preferred but not required.
- Some prior office and warehouse/logistics experience, including managing data with Microsoft Excel, forklift operations, and inventory management, is preferred but not required.
- Exceptional written, interpersonal, and verbal skills.
- Data entry experience with a high level of proficiency and accuracy.
- Must possess a valid license and a favorable driving record.
- Reliable transportation.
- Ability to lift and move heavy objects up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to bend, lift, and sort materials repeatedly.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions.
- Ability to drive county vehicle(s).
- Ability to travel to various local units and other sites within and outside of the County.
- Ability to enter, access, and retrieve information from a computer.
- Ability to access office files.
- Forklift certification is favorable.
- Primarily works in outdoor environments, including non-climate-controlled infrastructure.
