Job Description

Kirtland Local Schools is looking to fill a vacancy for an Educational Aide for the  school year. Full-time employment includes benefits eligibility.

Reports to: Principal and/or assigned Teacher

Job Objective: Perform a variety of classroom support and student personal care services as directed under the supervision of an assigned teacher. Perform a variety of classroom activities that supports the instructional classroom programming which enables students with disabilities to participate in the educational program and set fully.

Essential Functions:

The following are typical work responsibilities. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable a qualified individual with a disability to perform essential functions.

  • Provide support to the academic program and instructional activities under the guidance of the assigned teacher
  • Work with small groups and/or individual students.
  • Acquire basic proficiency in skills that support student needs (e.g., sign language, finger spelling, etc.).
  • Help students with remedial and/or enrichment activities. Reinforce instructional objectives introduced by the teacher.
  • Perform clerical work related to classroom activities. Prepare and distribute classroom materials. Maintain records as directed.
  • Help keep program areas orderly (e.g., store equipment, shelve books, clean spills, etc.). Sanitize equipment as directed.
  • Utilize safe work practices for self and others.
  • Uphold board policies and follow administrative guidelines and procedures.
  • Assist in the supervision of students throughout the day including lunch, arrival/departure, rest periods, electives, field trips, etc.
  • Help facilitate community participation in activities that enhance student learning.
  • Respond to student requests for assistance.
  • Prepare for the support of the student by becoming familiar with materials for the day in advance.
  • Prepare classroom equipment for use (technology).
  • Promote student independence, providing fading support when directed.
  • Implement prescribed behavior plans and provide specific accommodations.
  • Position students to take full advantage of each learning environment (e.g., line-of-sight, proximity to equipment, the height of work surfaces, etc.).
  • Follow prescribed medical plans and/or assist students with personal hygiene care (e.g., toileting, tube feeding, catheterization, etc.) as trained by a licensed healthcare professional.
  • Help feed students. Comply with personal hygiene rules and standard sanitation procedures.
  • Participate (and pass requirements where applicable) in all required training, including but not limited to vehicle safety, first aid, CPR, crisis intervention, blood borne pathogens, and others deemed appropriate for the position.
  • Must have physical ability to use physical holds (after appropriate/certified training completed) and utilize with youth ages 5-18 for crisis intervention.
  • Render basic first aid and assist with the self‑administration of medications when a school nurse is not available.
  • Participate in staff development activities, parent conferences, team meetings, and staff meetings as scheduled or assigned.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records. Submit required paperwork on time.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Take precautions to ensure safety. Watch for conduct and situations that may indicate a problem. Work with supervisors to manage or eliminate risk factors. Utilize restraint and control techniques only as directed and trained.
  • Uphold the student conduct code.
  • Maintain high expectations for behavior and performance.
  • Provide appropriate student supervision as directed.
  • Report suspected child abuse and/or neglect to supervisor and/or civil authorities as required by law.
  • Work with the classroom teacher to address persistent behavior problems.
  • Ride the bus to monitor student behavior and/or physical well‑being implementing behavior plans and seizure action plans, as necessary.
