Director Of Tax Strategy / Advanced Planning
This is not a traditional law firm role. There are no billable-hour requirements. You will not be grinding away on cookie-cutter documents or cranking out repetitive work. Instead, this role is about strategy, creativity, and impact.
We often compare the role to the homebuilding process. Our Director of Tax Strategy / Advanced Planning serves as the architect. You will help design the blueprint - identifying needle-moving strategies that can help clients mitigate income tax, capital gains tax, and estate tax while coordinating with the broader team to bring those strategies to life.
The right person will love solving complex problems, working directly with successful families and entrepreneurs, and seeing the real-world impact of their ideas.
The Director of Tax Strategy / Advanced Planning will work closely with our advisors, investment team, planning team, CPAs, estate attorneys, and outside legal and tax professionals to identify, design, and coordinate advanced planning strategies for our highest-value client relationships.
This person will help clients think proactively about the issues that matter most: reducing income tax drag, preparing for business exits, transferring wealth efficiently, protecting family assets, coordinating charitable giving, and building long-term legacy plans.
The ideal candidate is an attorney with experience in tax, M&A, business succession, estate planning, or closely related areas. We are looking for someone who can understand complex legal and tax concepts, translate them into practical strategies, and communicate them clearly to clients and internal team members.
Develop proactive tax and advanced planning strategies for high-income, high-net-worth, and ultra-high-net-worth clients.
Identify opportunities to mitigate income tax, capital gains tax, and estate tax through thoughtful planning.
Advise on strategies related to business sales, liquidity events, concentrated stock positions, equity compensation, charitable planning, estate planning, asset protection, business succession, and family wealth transfer.
Work directly with founders, CEOs, executives, business owners, and affluent families to understand their goals and planning opportunities.
Collaborate with advisors and internal planning professionals to integrate tax strategy into broader wealth management plans.
Coordinate with clients' outside CPAs, estate attorneys, corporate attorneys, and other professionals to ensure successful implementation.
Serve as an internal advanced planning resource for advisor team.
Help educate clients and team members on sophisticated planning concepts in a clear, practical, and actionable way.
Contribute to the continued buildout of multi-family office platform.
Stay current on tax law, estate planning developments, business succession strategies, and planning opportunities relevant to high-net-worth families.
The ideal candidate is highly intelligent, strategic, curious, and impact-driven. You enjoy working on complex planning issues, but you also know how to explain sophisticated ideas in plain English.
You may currently be working at a law firm and looking for a role with more purpose, better work-life balance, and closer client impact. You may enjoy tax, estate, M&A, or business succession work, but not the traditional law firm model. You may be tired of billable hours and want to apply your technical knowledge in a more entrepreneurial, client-centered environment.
This role is built for someone who wants to be the architect - not the document factory.
J.D. required.
Approximately 3+ years of relevant experience at a law firm, accounting firm, family office, wealth management firm, or similar professional services environment.
Experience in one or more of the following areas: tax planning, estate planning, M&A, business succession, corporate transactions, executive compensation, charitable planning, or advanced wealth planning.
Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. state.
Ohio law license preferred but not required, provided the candidate is willing to become licensed in Ohio.
Strong understanding of income tax, capital gains tax, estate tax, and wealth transfer planning concepts.
Ability to work directly with high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth clients.
Strong communication skills and ability to simplify complex strategies for clients and advisors.
Collaborative mindset and willingness to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Entrepreneurial, proactive, and intellectually curious.
High attention to detail, strong judgment, and the ability to handle confidential client matters with discretion.
This is not a billable-hours role.
This is not a document-production role.
This is not a traditional law firm track.
This is a strategic, in-house advanced planning role inside a growing multi-family office.
