Assistant Principal/Athletic Director - Central High School (2053)

Purpose Statement:

The Assistant Principal/Athletic Director will be a transformational and instructional leader. This leader will focus on quality in teaching, learning, equity, curriculum, school culture, student success, student athletics and activities, and parent engagement. Provides leadership and oversees the athletic programs and extracurricular activities for the high school.

The Assistant Principal/Athletic Director is directly responsible for supervising the entire school athletic program, including all coaches, student fees and clearance, equipment inventory, ordering and management; fiscal management for all teams and district fees/gate receipts; after school/evenings for all home contests (Fall, Winter, Spring); and liaison to athletic league.

The job of Assistant Principal supports the building Principal in ensuring academic success of students, performing school site activities as may be delegated by Principal, and representing the school within district and community. Ensure that student learning through the lens of equity and cultural relevance drives all decisions and aligns with the vision of the District.

This role reports to the Principal.

Essential Duties/Functions

The ability to create and sustain a school culture that nurtures high expectations, a commitment to personal and academic excellence, and fosters a growth mindset.

  • Provides coordination and oversight of athletic programs and extracurricular activities, including the hiring, training, and supervision of coaches; budgeting; scheduling; and transportation.
  • Works with students, staff, and parents to continuously improve all aspects of the learning environment.
  • Remains current regarding trends and best practices related to education and school management, and shares this knowledge with staff.
  • Works with staff to ensure that all students are known, nurtured, and included in the school community.
  • Participates in recruiting, screening, hiring, assigning and training of school staff.
  • Assumes responsibility for the conduct of students at extracurricular events.
  • Supports the work of the district’s Title IX Coordinator.
  • Ensures OSAA standards and procedures are followed.
  • Provides supervision for athletic and extracurricular events.
  • Assumes responsibility for the safety of all facets of the athletic program, coordinating with Risk Management and Athletic Trainers as needed.
  • Takes the lead in resolving problems, issues, and concerns that may arise within the athletic program or extracurricular activities.
  • Works with the district facilities department in a collaborative way to address the needs of the district athletic program.
  • Displays an optimistic, energetic, tenacious, and dynamic perspective.
  • Creates and sustains engaging and positive relationships with students and adults.
  • Instills a culture of reason, trust, fairness, respect, civility, community, discipline, and a commitment to personal and professional integrity.
  • Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of district-approved building curriculum to ensure academic success of students.
  • Has strong experience in working with diverse populations, including emerging bilinguals, students in alternative settings, and highly capable students to ensure success for all students.
  • Composes a wide variety of materials (e.g., quantity reports, student activities, correspondence, audits, etc.) to document activities, provide written references, and convey information.
  • Evaluates assigned personnel (e.g., teachers, support staff) to ensure standards are achieved and performance is maximized.
  • Facilitates communication between personnel, students, and/or parents to evaluate situations, solve problems, and resolve conflicts.
  • Facilitates meetings, processes, etc. to meet curriculum guidelines and state mandates.
  • Intervenes in occurrences of inappropriate behavior of students and assists students in modifying such behavior and developing successful interpersonal skills.
  • Manages various school administrative functions (e.g., student disciplinary policy, school schedule, assigned personnel) to enforce school, district, and state policy and maintain safety and efficiency of operations.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars to convey and gather information required to perform functions.
  • Presents information (e.g., curriculum, budget overviews, accounting processes, distribution formulas) to communicate information, gain feedback, and ensure adherence to established internal procedures.
  • Supports the principal by providing assistance with administrative duties.
  • Observes laws, district policies and procedures, and professional standards for the position.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with school personnel, parents, students, and the public; works collaboratively as a team member.
