North Island College is seeking a qualified instructor for our Carpentry Apprenticeship Level 1 program to be delivered in Port Hardy. This role involves instruction, program development, lesson planning, and tool/equipment maintenance while implementing the College’s vision, goals, and objectives, modeling professional conduct, and fostering a culturally responsive learning environment.
Responsibilities- Plan and prepare learning materials and instructional environments.
- Use varied approaches and materials to address diverse learning needs.
- Teach assigned subject areas covering required subject matter or skill activities.
- Create a positive, supportive, and caring learning environment.
- Provide regular office hours and classroom support to students.
- Clearly communicate learning outcomes, assessment methods, and grading criteria.
- Design and conduct student evaluations, keeping them informed of progress.
- Submit grades timely and maintain accurate records of enrollment and achievement.
- Collaborate on program development, curriculum design, and lesson planning.
- Maintain tool and equipment, ensuring safety and readiness.
- Support Indigenous students by building respectful, culturally safe classroom environments, integrating Indigenous knowledge systems, and facilitating community partnerships.
- Participate in professional development in Indigenous education, cultural safety, trauma‑informed practices, and adult learning methodologies.
- Engage in college community activities, meetings, and professional committees as required.
- Adhere to College policies, enrollment management, and health & safety procedures.
- Assist in budget planning and training program management.
- Journeyperson Interprovincial Qualification in Carpentry (Red Seal).
- Certificate of Apprenticeship.
- Minimum 5 years as a journeyperson on diverse construction projects.
- Experience instructing carpentry apprenticeship technical training.
- Completion of the Provincial Instructors Diploma program.
- Strong knowledge of the BC Carpentry program outline.
- Experience establishing and managing training programs, budgets, and lesson plans.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with MS Office, learning technologies, and digital tools.
- Demonstrated ability in blended learning and online instruction.
- Strong organizational, time‑management, and prioritization skills.
- A commitment to continuous improvement and interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Deep familiarity with Carpentry program outlines and content.
- Proficiency in instructional technologies and learning platforms.
- Ability to create engaging, culturally responsive curriculum.
- Experience with assessment, feedback, and student support programs.
- Strong computer literacy and data management skills.
- Collaboration skills with faculty, staff, students, and community partners.
- Ability to work independently and in teams across multiple modalities.
