Job Description & How to Apply Below

Indiana Steel Fabricating is a growing, well-respected structural steel fabricator based in Indianapolis, known for delivering high-quality workmanship and building long-term partnerships with our customers. This is an excellent opportunity for a hands‑on Structural Engineer who enjoys doing real engineering work and wants their calculations and decisions to directly impact fabrication and construction. This role is ideal for an engineer with a minimum of 3 years of experience who wants to deepen their expertise in steel connection design while working closely with estimating, detailing, and project teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform structural steel connection design calculations, including bolted and welded connections, bracing connections, moment connections, and miscellaneous steel
  • Participate in the up‑front review of contract drawings and specifications when new projects are awarded, identifying connection‑related issues, design gaps, and constructability concerns early
  • Support the Estimating team on bid and design‑build opportunities by developing preliminary connection concepts, quantities, and technical input
  • Assist Estimating with technical questions related to connections, load paths, and connection assumptions during pricing
  • Coordinate with outside engineering firms on larger or more complex projects, supporting design efforts and ensuring alignment with fabrication requirements
  • Assist Project Managers by answering technical questions and helping clarify connection scope, assumptions, and design intent early in the project lifecycle
  • Work closely with the Detailing department to ensure drawings accurately reflect connection design intent, assumptions, and calculation requirements
  • Review design details to ensure they are code‑compliant, buildable, and efficient for shop fabrication and field erection
  • Maintain organized and complete engineering calculation packages and supporting documentation
Tools & Technology (Preferred Experience)
  • Steel connection design software (e.g., IDEA Stati Ca, RAM Connection, or similar)
  • Experience with Tekla Structures or SDS/2 for coordination with detailing and fabrication teams is a plus
  • Strong proficiency in Excel for engineering calculations, checks, and documentation
  • Experience using AI‑assisted tools for engineering productivity, analysis support, documentation, or workflow efficiency is a plus
  • Comfort working in a collaborative, technology‑enabled environment that values efficiency and continuous improvement
Experience & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in structural steel or connection design
  • Strong working knowledge of AISC steel design and connection design principles
  • Experience performing hands‑on engineering calculations for steel connections
  • Familiarity with fabrication and detailing practices strongly preferred
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license a plus, but not required
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating across estimating, detailing, and project teams
  • Strong attention to detail and a practical, problem‑solving mindset
Benefits & Growth

Indiana Steel Fabricating offers a stable, long‑term opportunity with a growing structural steel fabricator that values quality, trust, and continuous improvement. Engineers in this role gain direct exposure to real projects—from estimating and connection design through fabrication—allowing for meaningful technical growth and increased responsibility over time. We provide competitive compensation, benefits including long‑term disability coverage, and a collaborative work environment where engineers are encouraged to develop practical expertise and expand their impact as the company grows.
