Overview
Product Development Engineer/Scientist is a role within the AFC&D Division to support converter customers in the Product Applications team. The level (Product Development Engineer or Senior Product Development Engineer) will be determined based on experience, technical expertise, and demonstrated capabilities. The role supports commercial efforts through product recommendations, design, and cost out initiatives, and leads solution development, manufacturing scale-up, and commercialization activities while collaborating across R&D, Product Management, Commercial, Operations, Supply Chain, and external customers.
Building strong customer relationships is key.
- Work directly with customers to foster positive relationships to drive growth and profit.
- Collaborate with internal technical teams, manufacturing, suppliers, customers, and commercial partners to identify product requirements and develop innovative solutions.
- Translate customer and market needs into technical product specifications.
- Partner with manufacturing teams to optimize products for efficient production and successful commercialization.
- Prepare Bills of Materials (BOMs), technical documentation, and commercialization packages.
- Support project management activities using the Stage Gate Process, ensuring milestones, timelines, and deliverables are achieved.
- Interact with raw material suppliers to stay current with polymer systems, functional additives, testing techniques, and various packaging and manufacturing equipment.
- Assess current products and product lines for increasing sustainability, including down gauging, carbon emission reduction, recycled content, and renewable or compostable materials.
- Lead cost-out initiatives with customers, operations, and procurement to deliver financial objectives for the division.
- Effectively communicate technical findings and recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences.

- Required
:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Science, or a related engineering discipline. - 3+ years of experience in product development, process engineering, manufacturing engineering, materials engineering, or related technical field.
- Experience with polymer materials, film products, extrusion technologies, or similar manufacturing processes.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple technical projects simultaneously.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating across cross-functional teams.
- Willingness to travel approximately 30-50%.

:
Experience with coextruded blown or cast film development. - Knowledge of flexible packaging materials and resin systems.
- Experience with continuous web manufacturing processes.
- Experience with Six Sigma or structured problem-solving methodologies.
- Experience supporting product commercialization and manufacturing scale-up.
- Working conditions:
Approximately 60-70% office/project work and 30-40% manufacturing environment or customer location. - Travel:
