About The Role
TJ Hunter Engineering is a growing civil engineering firm with a passion for building resilient, community-driven infrastructure—and we’re looking for a seasoned Roadway & Drainage Design Engineer to join our team! If you're a skilled designer with a collaborative spirit and deep technical know-how in both roadway and drainage systems, we’d love to meet you! In this role, you’ll take the lead on the design and delivery of complex transportation, TxDOT, Municipal and Land Development projects—from early-stage planning through final deliverables.
We’re looking for someone with a strong foundation in roadway geometrics and stormwater infrastructure, experience with H&H modeling, and a drive to help shape projects that serve the public well. This is more than a job – it's a chance to contribute to the infrastructure that keeps communities moving. You'll be part of a tight-knit team that values good work, open communication, and a shared commitment to building better.
- Lead or support the design and production of roadway and drainage plans for transportation infrastructure projects.
- Prepare roadway alignments, profiles, cross-sections, and construction details in compliance with TxDOT or municipal standards.
- Perform hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) analyses for stormwater systems, channels, cross-drainage structures (bridges and culverts), and detention ponds.
- Develop drainage area maps, perform runoff calculations, and size of storm drains accordingly.
- Prepare technical reports, including drainage studies, design memoranda, and full PS&E (Plans, Specifications, and Estimates) packages.
- Conduct site visits to support data collection, assess constructability, and validate design assumptions.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and relevant public agencies to ensure design integration, regulatory compliance, and constructability.
- Support proposal development by contributing to project scoping, budgeting, and scheduling.
- Assist in quantity take-offs, cost estimating, and specification development.
- Participate in client meetings, field reviews, and construction support tasks as needed.
- Review and respond to internal and external feedback on design submittals.
- Support permitting efforts and ensure preparation of compliance documentation in alignment with project requirements.
- Provide technical quality control to ensure deliverables meet standards, requirements, and client expectations.
- Contribute to the creation of clear, concise project reports and presentations for clients and stakeholders.
- Serve as a technical resource during project meetings, providing guidance and insights across phases of delivery.
- Mentor junior staff and support their development through project engagement and knowledge sharing.
- Provide leadership in technical review and ensure consistency in design quality and documentation.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or a related discipline from an accredited institution
- Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in relevant roadway and/or drainage design
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in the state of Texas (or ability to obtain one within 6 months)
- Extensive knowledge of TxDOT design criteria, manuals and plan preparation standards
- Experience hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, detention design, storm drainage design, FEMA Letters of Map Change, and Floodplain Fill Mitigation Plans
- Strong command of H&H modeling tools such as StormCAD, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS or other industry-approved design tools
- Proficiency in CAD platforms, such as AutoCAD, Micro Station, Open Roads Designer
- Demonstrated ability to lead project tasks and coordinate across teams
- Experience coordinating with roadway or civil site design teams to integrate stormwater systems
- Strong technical writing, presentation, and client communication skills
- Ability to communicate technical findings to internal teams or public agency staff
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and deliver quality work under tight deadlines
- Experience with FEMA processes…
