Position: National Consultant to support the Development of Mountain Regions in Kyrgyzstan (Roster Call)

Overview

Background As a mountainous country, Kyrgyzstan has been consistently attracting the attention of the world community to the problems of sustainable development of mountain regions since the early 2000s. In order to ensure environmental security of the country, increase climate resilience, preserve natural heritage and implement the Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions in 2023–2027, the President signed the Decree declaring 2023–2027 as the Five Years of Action.

The three entities co-ordinate efforts of all government bodies on the development of mountain regions: the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision; the President’s Special Representative on implementation of the Five Years of Action; and Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2023, Kyrgyzstan’s government approved a Concept and Roadmap for the Five Years of Action, outlining a strategic plan with activities including engaging youth in environmental protection and community-based climate action.

In 2027, Kyrgyzstan will host the Second Global Mountain Summit “Bishkek+25”.
