Schedule:

Part-Time Overnight – 9:00 PM – 7:00 AM, two nights per week; 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM, one shift per week.

Position Overview

The Behavioral Health Counselor facilitates behavioral health crisis assessments in the emergency department and/or ambulatory settings. The role involves conducting comprehensive assessments with patients and collaterals when indicated and providing crisis intervention and disposition recommendations. The counselor collaborates closely with healthcare team members to ensure patients receive timely, safe, and effective care, while also connecting patients and families with necessary resources and support systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facilitate patient engagement in treatment and education within a supportive environment
  • Communicate and collaborate with all members of the healthcare team to facilitate the episode of care
  • Interpret and communicate complex patient and family needs, role modeling caring practices to other caregivers
  • Assess psychosocial risk factors through evaluation of prior functioning levels, support systems, reactions to illness, and ability to cope
  • Counsel patients and families regarding emotional, social, and financial consequences of illness or disability
  • Access and mobilize family and community resources to meet patient needs
  • Conduct mental health assessments upon physician referral
  • Serve as the point person for cases involving child abuse/neglect, elder abuse/neglect, institutional abuse, and domestic violence
  • Act as liaison between Indiana University Health and local protective services (APS/CPS)
  • Provide intervention in guardianship (temporary/permanent), foster care, adoption, and mental health Level II placements
  • Maintain principles, practices, and techniques of crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Education:

    Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or related mental health field required
  • Experience:

    3-5 years of relevant healthcare, mental health, or community-based experience preferred
  • Licensure:
    Current Indiana license as an LCSW, LMHC, LMFT, LCAC, or HSPP required
  • Certifications:
  • Crisis intervention certification required within 90 days of hire
  • BLS certification required within 30 days of hire
  • Knowledge &

    Skills:
  • Psychosocial assessments, therapeutic counseling, and crisis intervention techniques
  • Knowledge of disease processes and human behavior related to social needs
  • Implementation of evidence-based practices (CBT, MI, DBT)
  • Knowledge of legal mandates for child and adult protective services (state and county)
  • Principles of growth, development, and end-of-life care
  • Ability to provide a safe, therapeutic environment and instruct patients in daily activities and programming
  • Basic proficiency in Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with community agencies, law enforcement, schools, probation, and other organizations
