The COTA provides unique therapeutic services to enchance the goals and objectives of the residents. The COTA is primarily responsible for implementing the therapeutic program prescribed by the Occupational Therapist.
Job DescriptionThe COTA is responsible for treatment of residents who demonstrate disorders or neurological deficit, weakness and paralysis. Evaluation and treatment will only be conducted after a written order is received from the physical.
Screening of Residents- New facility residents:
Within 24 hours of admission - Long term residents:
Upon receipt of a "Significant Change" form and/or upon referral from nursing
- All documentation will be co-signed by the RPT
- Weekly notes
The COTA is responsible for attending all required facility meetings and in-services, including Medicare meetings, residents,staffinf,fanily meetings and care plans
The COTA will in cooperation with Regional Manager, develop programs appropriate to the needs of the residents in the facility, to assist them in achieving their highest feasible level of functioning.
The COTA will assist the facility in meeting the standards necessary to obtain state,federal and other appropriate certification
Will employ and follow all appropriate facility infection control policies and procedures and will respect and follow OBRA Residents Guidelines
The COTA will contact the Regional manager if productivity levels consistently fall below or exceed the standard to indicate the need for additional staffing or the need for assistance in screening and identifying residents in need of PT services.
Will always present her/himself in a professional manner including professional conduct, professional communication and appropriate dress while in the facility.
Other DutiesOther duties as assigned by the Program Manager, Supervising RPT and Regional Manager
Phyical DemandsThe COTA is required to perform a variety of duties relative to the job. The performance of these activities would place the job of COTA into the moderate heavy category of work demand based upon.
Lifting:
The Assistant is required to perform transfers of residents to and from a variety of surfaces including bed,hair,and commode. Transfers may require maximal assist with residents weighing greater than 100lbs. This activity may be performd on a frequent basis. Occasion all the asstant is required to lift supplies to 50lbs chest level and 10lbs to overhead.
Push/Pull:
The COTA is occasionally required to push/pull residents weighing up tolbs in wheelchair distance up to 200 yards. This activity may be performed frequently for shorter distances.
Work Environment:
The COTA is required to work in a variety of environmental conditions
- The COTA - Must be able to read, write and understand English language
- Must attend a minimum of 12 hours of continuing educational programs provided by the center to maintain Certification
- 2 years Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant Program state licensure.
- Extensive knowledge of department processes
- Knowledge of therapeutic techniques.
