GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Provides professional nursing care under supervision and following established standards and practices.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds. Requires corrected near and far vision and hearing to normal ranges. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. Potential exposure to communicable diseases or potentially infected bodily fluids.
TYPCIAL WORKING CONDITIONS
- Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, potentially infectious bodily fluids, toxic substances, and medicinal preparations.
- Utilization of a variety of medical equipment. Public Environment. Bloodborne area.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Observes, records, and reports patient's condition and reaction to drugs and treatment to physician.
- Oversees appointment bookings and ensures preferences are given to patients in emergency situations.
- Maintains timely flow of patients.
- Greets patients and prepares them for physical examination. Screens patients for appropriate information.
- Instructs a patient in collection of samples and tests.
- Arranges for patient testing, admission, and surgical procedures.
- Responds to telephone calls, making accurate assessment and taking complete messages. Responds to patient needs in a timely manner. Phones prescription orders into pharmacy.
- Assists with patient and family teaching.
- Ensures that charts are prepared for the day and that all appropriate papers are in place.
- Applies principles of aseptic technique and universal precautions.
- Cleans and disinfects equipment, as necessary.
- Labels and maintains proper storage of specimens. Provides specimens for courier pick-up.
- Performs related work as required and requested within scope of ability, training, and licensure.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the principles and skill needed for practical nursing to provide patient care and treatment.
- Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
- Knowledge of medications and their effects on patients.
- Knowledge of patient education principles to develop a self- care program.
- Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
- Knowledge of computer keyboard.
- Skill in administering a variety of treatments and medications as directed.
- Skill in using various equipment for examination and treatment procedures.
- Skill in taking vital signs.
- Skill in maintaining records and written reports.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
- Ability to maintain quality control standards.
- Ability to recognize problems and recommend solutions
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

EDUCATION
High School diploma or GED.
Graduation from an accredited school of practical nursing.
EXPERIENCE
One-year practical nursing experience in an acute care setting of medical office setting desirable.
CERTIFICATE/LICENSE
Valid current license to practice in the state of Indiana. CPR Certification.
