Laboratory Analyst I

The primary responsibility of the Laboratory Analyst I is to execute established QC methods for analyzing animal feed and ingredients. Additional duties include assisting in analysis of biological and genetic animal markers in the Molecular Nutrition Lab, as needed. This role also involves assisting Research Leads to meet Research Goals by performing routine laboratory tasks, ensuring high standards of quality and accuracy.

Key Responsibilities:

• Analyze grain and finished feed samples for mycotoxins using available technologies, including the BOLT machine and ELISA kits.
• Perform enzyme analysis following established protocols on animal feed, ingredients, and other nutrition products.
• Perform biomarker analysis, gene expression, and simple microbiology analysis, as requested
• Grind, weigh out, and extract samples for analysis.
• Perform particle size testing on corn, complete feed, and other ingredients.
• Perform routine lab and equipment maintenance procedures including cleaning glassware, restocking supplies, and preparing reagents.
• Receive, process, and enter samples into the laboratory database in the absence of the Inventory Specialist.
• Assist the Research and Innovation group in executing animal trials, sample collection, and other duties as required by the Research department while maintaining a detailed laboratory notebook.
• Adhere to laboratory safety policies and procedures.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Other duties and responsibilities, as assigned.
• A portion of this work is conducted in a laboratory environment with exposure to chemicals and various types of laboratory equipment.
• A portion of this work is conducted in a temperature-regulated office.
• A portion of this work is conducted at a commercial feed mill and research farm.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Science in biology, chemistry, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

• 1-2 years of lab experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Technical

Skills:

• Knowledge of basic laboratory procedures and use of laboratory equipment for weighing, pipetting, pH calibration, performing dilutions, etc.
• Knowledge of experimental procedures.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Experience using a spectrophotometer is preferred.

Physical & Safety Requirements:

• Ability to lift 50 or more pounds periodically.
• May be exposed to airborne particles and chemicals used in laboratory setting including animal feed and enzymes.
• Mandated use of company-issued Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Adherence to all company safety procedures and regulations to maintain a safe working environment.
