Hello,
Are you interested in extending your knowledge in optimization to support decision making with multiobjective optimization in real applications and preparing a PhD thesis on this? We are looking for a motivated doctoral researcher to join the internationally recognized Multiobjective Optimization Group ((Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).) at the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland. In the group, we specialize in interactive multiobjective optimization methods and their implementations inspired by real applications.
We work with international collaborators and our focus is on supporting decision makers in directing the search for the most preferred solution utilizing their domain expertise.
We offer an inspiring and international research environment on the beautiful campus next to a lake and aim at high quality and impact in our research.
The open position is part of a project and the tasks would be about developing new interactive multiobjective optimization methods to support industrial decision makers navigating complex trade-offs in uncertain, volatile energy markets. The research on multiobjective optimization is at the intersection of mathematical optimization, decision analytics, Bayesian uncertainty modelling and visual decision support.
To be a successful candidate, we expect firm knowledge of optimization methods and preferably knowledge of various multiobjective optimization methods as well as strong motivation in supporting decision making under uncertainty with interactive methods. Solid programming skills are needed since contributing to the development of the open‑source software framework DESDEO (, implemented in Python) is expected as part of the research.
Beyond interactive multiobjective optimization, the doctoral researcher will work on at least one of the following topics: uncertainty modelling and Bayesian belief elicitation, explainable multiobjective optimization and adversarial and probabilistic risk analysis.
but before June 15, 2026 at the latest.
With best regards, Kaisa Miettinen
