Position: Heavy Equipment Maintenance Mechanic - Cortland County Department of Public Works (Landfill)

Heavy Equipment Maintenance Mechanic
- Cortland County Department of Public Works (Landfill)

The work involves responsibility for performing repairs requiring a high level of skill to diesel and gasoline powered, self-propelled and non self-propelled motor driven equipment, vehicles and stationary equipment. This class differs from Automotive Mechanic by virtue of required knowledge of and skill in maintaining fuel injection and supercharging systems common to diesel powerplants, as well as making overall repairs to a wide range of heavy equipment commonly used in highway construction and maintenance.

General instructions are received regarding tasks to be done with leeway allowed for the use of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Does related work as required.

Full Time, 40 hours per week with benefits

Minimum Qualifications
  • Two (2) years’ experience as a skilled automotive mechanic which shall have involved the repair and overhaul of automotive diesel engines and heavy motor equipment; OR
  • Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Mechanic traineeship
NOTE

Successful completion of a certified training course in diesel engine repair offered by a New York State approved technical training institute may be substituted for one (1) year of experience described above.

Special Requirement
  • Possession of a valid New York State Class D Driver's license
    * is required. Failure to maintain a NYS Class D Driver's License including driving privileges throughout employment will result in disciplinary action or dismissal.
  • Possession of a Motor Vehicle Inspector's Certificate.*
  • A New York State Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brake and tank endorsements and a Motor Vehicle Inspector's Certificate are required within six (6) months of appointment. Failure to obtain and/or maintain a Class A Commercial Driver's license with all required endorsements will result in dismissal

Pre-employment screenings required.
