Position: Public Work - Chief Mechanic

Management and monitoring of the equipment preventative maintenance schedule. Work is performed independently under guidelines of this description.

Chief Mechanic

Performs lead and skilled automotive equipment maintenance and repair work. Work also involves overseeing the diagnosing, scheduling of maintaining vehicle maintenance, maintaining vehicle records, ensuring that vehicles and equipment are in proper working order in a timely and efficient manner. Management and monitoring of the equipment preventative maintenance schedule. Work is performed independently under guidelines of this description.

Non-Exempt Full Time with Benefits $69,311.71-$74,311.71 Depending On Experience Scope of Responsibility

Responsible for the independent monitoring, diagnostics and repair of the department's equipment fleet and to maintain accurate records. Performs a variety of skilled mechanical, electrical and hydraulic repairs.

Typical Duties
  • Inspect and diagnose mechanical, electrical, electronic, and hydraulic defects and problems on light and heavy-duty equipment and perform any necessary repairs.
  • Provide repair assistance on site as needed. (On site may include all 5 shops and remote locations)
  • Oversees assistant in cost research for the purchase of parts and supplies for repair and maintenance needs.
  • Oversees assistant in maintaining records of time, materials, parts and work performed. Prioritize equipment & repairs based on county-wide needs.
  • Evaluate reported breakdowns and assign repairs to road maintenance shops if appropriate.
  • Report on supervisor’s equipment status, priority changes and shop repair assignments as requested.
  • Contribute to developing and maintaining equipment management systems, including preventative maintenance scheduling and monitoring.
  • May assist when shops need additional manpower for the maintenance or construction of County roads.
  • Use independent judgment and initiative in evaluating problems and developing solutions to problems.
  • Perform all work in accordance with sound safety practices.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within scope of knowledge and authority.
Minimum Qualifications

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by training and certifications in automotive equipment maintenance and repair.

Experience:

Six years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of all types of light and heavy equipment, including one year administrative and supervisory responsibility.

Knowledge
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance and repair programs for light and heavy-duty equipment.
  • Knowledge of all types of gasoline and diesel engines, automatic and manual transmissions, hydraulics, shop equipment and procedures, and welding and cutting.
  • Knowledge of automotive shop administrative procedures or practices.
  • Knowledge of personal computers and software used in an automotive repair shop.
  • Knowledge of work hazards and safety procedures: cognizance of personal and public safety matters.
Abilities

Essential Requirements

  • Ability to schedule, organize, maintain, coordinate, diagnose and repair a variety of; county owned equipment.
  • Ability to: communicate orally and in writing; to read and apply information from repair & parts manuals.
  • Licenses and other Requirements:
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) possession not required upon initial hiring but must have the ability to obtain a CDL class A within the first year of hire. A current Flagging and Traffic Control Card and a current First Aid certification or ability to demonstrate ability to acquire within determined timeframe.
  • Must have CDL endorsement when required.
  • Certifications are desired in:
    Master Mechanic, Diesel Mechanics and Air Conditioning, but not required
