Job Description & How to Apply Below

About the Role

Summit City Steel Erection is hiring a Field Service Technician to diagnose, service, and repair construction equipment in the shop and in the field. You’ll work on a diverse fleet that includes cranes, boom lifts, scissor lifts, telehandlers, diesel trucks, trailers, welders, generators, compressors, and more.

You’ll be part of a small, in-house maintenance team that handles everything — we don’t send equipment out. You’re expected to self-manage on the mechanical side: diagnose the issue, figure out what it needs, get it fixed. The Lead Mechanic provides coordination and handles the most complex work, but you’re not waiting to be told what’s wrong with equipment you’re looking at.

This role reports to the Lead Mechanic. Field schedule is coordinated by the Dispatcher. You’ll work in the shop or in the field depending on where you’re needed.

What You’ll Do
  • Equipment Diagnosis, Repair & Maintenance
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, service, and repair: boom lifts, scissor lifts, telehandlers, cranes, welders, generators, compressors, diesel trucks, trailers, and other construction equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance as scheduled — oil changes, fluid services, filters, grease, and inspections.
  • Triage field breakdowns: assess severity, determine if it’s field-repairable, and get it running or communicate what’s needed.
  • Work in the shop or in the field as assigned.
Self-Direction & Mechanical Judgment
  • Self-direct on the mechanical side: diagnose issues, determine repair scope, and identify parts needed without being walked through it.
  • If a repair exceeds your current skill level,
    ** escalate
    * * to the Lead Mechanic. The standard is zero outside repairs — the team handles everything in-house.
  • The Lead Mechanic provides accountability and coordination, not step-by-step direction. You’re expected to think, troubleshoot, and execute.
Remote Troubleshooting
  • Walk field personnel through simple fixes by phone or video call to avoid unnecessary truck rolls.
Parts Ordering
  • Order parts directly when needed. Purchasing authority up to $1,000; over $1,000 requires approval.
  • When ordering, provide complete details (part, cost, vendor, equipment) for Fleetio tracking. No exceptions.
Documentation
  • Enter your own repair information into Fleetio: description, diagnosis, work performed, parts used, materials, labor hours, and cost.
  • Documentation is not optional. Every repair gets tracked. The Lead Mechanic reviews for completeness.
Communication & Coordination

Communicate equipment status changes (up/down) to the Lead Mechanic.

  • Coordinate daily with the Dispatcher on field schedule and with the Fleet Compliance Manager on documentation and compliance items.
  • For urgent breakdowns where the field calls you directly, notify the Lead Mechanic so the work order is created.
Safety
  • Follow all safety procedures, OSHA regulations, and jobsite requirements.
  • Maintain your service truck in clean, organized, road-ready condition.
What We’re Looking For
  • 3+ years field service or heavy equipment maintenance and repair experience.
  • Strong mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair: aerial lifts, telehandlers, diesel trucks, trailers, welders, generators, compressors, and similar equipment.
  • Comfortable working independently in the field with limited supervision.
  • Ability to read and work from electrical schematics and hydraulic diagrams is a plus.
  • Experience with fleet maintenance software is a plus (we use Fleetio).
  • CDL preferred or ability to obtain within 60 days.
  • Welding and fabrication skills are a plus.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
Benefits:
  • 401(k) matching
  • Dental insurance
  • Health insurance
  • Health savings account
  • Life insurance
  • Paid time off
  • Vision insurance
