Elementary School Assistant Principal

Reports to:

Principal Job Objective:
Helps manage assigned school programs and services.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid state department of education license/certificate appropriate for the position.
  • Successful elementary teaching and/or administrative experience preferred, but not required.
  • Indiana Certified School Safety Specialist Certification desired, but not required.
  • A record free of criminal violations that would prohibit public school employment.
  • Complies with drug-free workplace rules and board policies.
  • Keeps current with technology and other workplace innovations that support job functions.
  • Ability to multitask and effectively problem solve.
  • Ability to communicate successfully both written and verbal.
  • Effective organizational, planning, and project management skills.
  • Ability to identify, evaluate, and implement program options, auxiliary services, and curricular materials that support the diverse learning needs of students.
Essential Functions

The following are typical work responsibilities.

  • Manage assigned student service programs.

    Addresses issues that arise during the absence of the principal.
  • Administer attendance guidelines and consequences.
  • Administer and implement the student discipline program.
  • Participates as an active member of the management team.

    Upholds board policies and follows administrative procedures.

    Promotes a professional image of the school corporation.
  • Conducts guidance activities.
  • Consults with staff and families to address student concerns (e.g., excessive absences, at-risk behavior, mental/physical health, family/peer relations, etc.).Initiates referrals to community resources as needed (e.g., legal, health, welfare, etc.).Serves as a contact for public agencies.
  • Address truancy issues by providing directinterventions at school sites, communities, and homes of students at risk.
  • Work with counselors /social worker to participate in the referral process for mental health services and outside counseling services for students and families.
  • Provide peer mediation and conflict resolution for students, staff, and parents.
  • Create and implement behaviorinterventions with a focus on rehabilitating student behavior.
  • Advise administrators and teachers on issues regarding at-risk students.
  • Maintain a database for keeping track of interventions and the progress of the students.
  • Meet with students on a regular basis to facilitate students’ self-understanding and improvement of their behaviors.
  • Assist in creating student schedules and verifying timely pursuit of graduation requirements
  • Provides staff leadership and consensus development.

    Advances the change process.

    Helps implement strategies to accomplish organizational objectives.

    Helps resolve problems.
  • Maintains open and effective communications.

    Promotes the district’s mission, philosophy, and vision.

    Serves as an information resource.

    Keeps stakeholders informed about emerging issues.
  • Monitors community demographics, resources, and emerging trends.

    Helps mobilize the community to maintain a strong commitment of support for the school corporation.
  • Helps manage the board-approved budget for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Encourages program innovations.

    Pursues funding opportunities.

    Prepares grant/foundation applications.

    Implements funded proposals and complies with reporting requirements.
  • Participates in staff selection and orientation processes.

    Expresses high expectations and monitors staff performance (e.g., individual observations, consultations, staff meetings, etc.).
  • Promotes professionalism.
