Interim Controller - Construction
Location: Indianapolis, IN
Duration: Interim / Contract
Our client, a construction company based in Indianapolis, is seeking an experienced Interim Controller to oversee day‑to‑day accounting operations and provide leadership during a transition period. This role requires strong construction accounting expertise, hands‑on leadership, and the ability to quickly assess, stabilize, and improve financial processes.
Key Responsibilities- Lead all accounting operations, including month‑end close, general ledger, journal entries, and financial statement preparation
- Oversee construction accounting functions, including job cost accounting, work‑in‑progress (WIP) schedules, percentage‑of‑completion revenue recognition, and contract billing
- Review and analyze project margins, cost variances, and forecasts
, partnering with operations and project managers - Ensure accurate cash flow management
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and documentation
- Manage and mentor accounting staff; provide hands‑on support as needed
- Coordinate with external auditors, tax providers, and lenders
, as applicable - Support leadership with financial reporting, budgeting, and ad‑hoc analysis
- Assist with system/process improvements and ensure continuity during the interim period
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance;
CPA preferred - 7+ years of accounting experience
, with significant experience in the construction industry - Strong knowledge of WIP reporting, job costing, and construction revenue recognition
- Prior experience as a Controller or Interim Controller highly preferred
- Proficiency with construction accounting systems (e.g., Sage, Viewpoint, Procore, CMiC, or similar)
- Ability to step in quickly, work independently, and manage competing priorities
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative, roll‑up‑your‑sleeves approach
