As a Payroll Tax Accountant, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with state tax laws and regulations related to payroll functions. Your primary role will be a part of a team who manage and oversee payroll tax processes for our clients and co-employees to ensure accurate and timely filing, reporting, and payment of state payroll taxes in 47 states for over 17,000 co-employees.
Responsibilities- Manage and maintain accurate employee payroll tax information and records for multiple states.
- Calculate, review, and prepare payroll tax returns for state jurisdictions, including withholding taxes, unemployment taxes, disability taxes, and other related payments.
- Ensure timely and accurate filing of state payroll tax returns and associated forms.
- Effectively communicate with state tax agencies to solve problems, clarify complex tax requirements, and resolve tax-related discrepancies or issues.
- Keep updated on changes in state tax laws, regulations, and filing requirements, and implement necessary changes to ensure compliance.
- Conduct regular audits of payroll data to identify and rectify any errors or discrepancies.
- Respond promptly and efficiently to inquiries and requests from internal and external stakeholders, such as HR, Accounting, and Payroll departments, along with clients and employees, regarding state payroll taxes.
- Collaborate with internal teams to ensure accurate reporting of payroll tax data for financial statements and audits.
- Maintain a high level of data confidentiality while handling sensitive information related to employee payroll taxes.
- Assist with any special projects, reconciliations, or other payroll-related tasks as required.
- High School Diploma. Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field is preferred.
- Proven experience working as a Payroll Tax Accountant, with a deep understanding of state-specific payroll tax laws and regulations.
- Excellent knowledge of payroll systems, software, and reporting tools.
- Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Excel and other relevant software.
- Ability to handle tasks with accuracy, attention to detail, and within strict deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, to effectively interact with internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- A high level of integrity, reliability, and confidentiality.
- Experience with multi-state payroll processing and tax filings is highly desired.
