This position serves as a Damage to State Property Claims Accountant and is responsible for the timely billing and collecting of invoices due INDOT. The Senior Claims Accountant for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is responsible for management of essential programs within the Damage to State Property (DSP) program and serves as the subject matter expert in these areas. Responsibilities include ensuring the accuracy of documentation of 3,000+ files reports totaling approximately $6M & 10M annually, transmitting and receiving data, serving as the liaison between INDOT and Department of Revenue (DOR) and third‑party Collection’s agency, defining metrics to measure performance and proposing and implementing program enhancements that improve program performance efficiency.
LocationThis position is with INDOT's Central Office.
SalaryThe salary for this position traditionally starts at $53,222.00 but may be commensurate with education and work experience. Use our Compensation Calculator to view the total compensation package.
A Day in the LifeThe essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Prepare, examine, and analyze accounting records financial reports to assess compliance with procedural standards.
- Maintain or examine the records of government agencies.
- Advise the appointing authority and/or controller of the status of all accounts.
- Develop policies and procedures for general accounting and bookkeeping.
- Oversee usage of the computerized accounting system.
- Establish work methods and control measures for accounting/bookkeeping functions.
- Certify the accuracy of the agency’s financial records and accounts.
- Review reports for grant reconciliation for grant funded accounts.
- Direct program staff in accounting matters relating to specific program funding.
- Assist controller in budget preparation.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.
