The Staff Accountant plays a vital role in supporting the organization through a wide range of accounting tasks. Core responsibilities include maintaining the general ledger, preparing financial analyses, and assisting with accounts payable. This position demands strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and a high level of accuracy. The Staff Accountant I works collaboratively across departments to ensure efficient and reliable financial operations, demonstrating a proactive and detail-oriented work ethic.
SalaryStatement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $50,820.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
A Day in the Life:- Review daily bank activity and ensure transactions are recorded appropriately;
- Reconcile balance sheet accounts and resolve discrepancies.
- Prepare journal entries and research items affecting account balances.
- Track investments for deferred prizes and reconcile related asset and liability accounts;
- Monitor prepaid expenses and record monthly accruals for expenses;
- Coordinate monthly with executive staff to forecast departmental budgets;
- Assist management in annual budget preparation;
- Prepare monthly Financial Statements analysis for leadership.
- Review and approve scratch game orders and production loads;
- Record property management expenses and reconcile clearing account monthly;
- Initiate ACH and wire transfers, including monthly distribution of Surplus Revenue to the Lottery Surplus Fund;
- Complete the annual unclaimed property review, including sending and monitoring due diligence letters, directing payment reissues, and reporting property to the Office of the Attorney General;
- Perform monthly tax balancing and assist with annual Federal and State tax filings;
- Compile information and prepare analyses as requested for audits;
- Serve as back-up for processing payroll for the Comptroller of the State’s office;
- Assist with Hoosier Lottery Accounting responsibilities at the Indiana State Fair in August;
- Perform other related duties as required.
This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.
WhatYou'll Need for Success:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, financial management, or a related field preferred, with at least one year of professional experience in accounting or banking.
- Strong attention to detail, with a demonstrated commitment to accuracy and completeness.
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills, adept at examining situations and recommending effective solutions.
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
- Solid understanding of accounting and banking principles, including GAAP.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize workloads, and meet deadlines.
- Experience using computerized accounting systems.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
