General Statement of Duties:
The Senior Staff Accountant is an advanced individual contributor responsible for performing and coordinating key accounting activities across the organization, with primary ownership of significant components of the month-end close and financial reporting processes. This position prepares complex journal entries and reconciliations, maintains accurate accounting records, supports audits and regulatory filings, and helps strengthen internal controls and accounting processes to ensure timely, accurate, and GAAP-compliant financial results.
This position has no direct reports but serves as technical resource to the accounting team members and operational departments. The Senior Staff Accountant will meet deadlines and complete work with a high degree of accuracy, judgment, and accountability.
Essential Job Functions:
- Perform and coordinate assigned components of the month-end close, including journal entries, accruals, allocations, account analysis, and reporting, to support completion of a five-business day close.
- Prepare complex balance sheet reconciliations across multiple entities; investigate discrepancies and resolve reconciling items in a timely manner.
- Process the payroll general ledger file, intercompany entries and transfers, cash funding, and other recurring close transactions accurately and on schedule.
- Maintain and reconcile fixed assets, prepaid expenses, restricted contributions, and other supporting schedules and ledgers; ensure transactions are properly classified and documented.
- Prepare monthly financial reports and supporting analyses; identify unusual trends, variances, or errors and communicate findings to the CFO.
- Support accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash, and general ledger activities and serve as backup for critical accounting and payroll-related functions as assigned.
- Prepare work papers and schedules for annual financial audits, the Form 990 tax return, Medicare and Medicaid cost reports, regulatory filings, and other external reporting requirements.
- Support operating and capital budget development, forecasting, year-end close, and other financial planning activities through data preparation, analysis, and reconciliation.
- Maintain accounting controls and process documentation; recommend and implement improvements that increase accuracy, efficiency, consistency, and timeliness.
- Serve as a technical resource to staff accountants and other departments by answering accounting questions, promoting accurate data input, and supporting consistent accounting practices without supervisory responsibility.
