Job Description & How to Apply Below
Location: Edinburgh

NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.

AI tools like ChatGPT or Copilot can be great for planning and preparing your application—but your answers must be your own.

  • Show us the real you:
Your application should reflect your skills, experience, and motivations authentically.
  • Use AI wisely:
It’s fine to use AI for ideas or to check spelling and grammar, but don’t let it write your answers.
  • Why this matters:
Applications that rely on AI-generated content may be withdrawn. By applying, you confirm your responses are based on your own knowledge and achievements.

Tip:
Think of AI as a helper, not a substitute. We want to understand you—not an AI tool.

We will fully support disabled candidates, and candidates with long‑term conditions or who are neurodivergent by making reasonable adjustments to our recruitment policy and practices.

This is a leadership role where you will oversee the delivery of high‑quality monitoring across a diverse portfolio of clinical trials, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and safeguarding participant welfare. You will play a key role in shaping research governance practices, supporting inspection readiness, and driving quality improvement across a dynamic research environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage a risk-based clinical trial monitoring programme
  • Line manage and support a team of Clinical Trials Monitors
  • Plan, conduct and oversee monitoring visits across a complex trial portfolio
  • Ensure compliance with ICH‑GCP, UK regulations and research governance frameworks

  • Support preparation for and directly participate in regulatory inspections (e.g. MHRA)
  • Provide expert advice and training to researchers and stakeholders
About You

Applicants must have a masters degree in a clinical or life sciences subject, extensive clinical trial monitoring experience and a strong knowledge of ICH‑GCP and UK clinical trial legislation. Experience of managing or supervising staff and excellent organisational, analytical and communication skills are also essential. Experience of regulatory inspections, delivering training and writing SOPs is desirable for this role.

Additional Information

This is a hybrid working role with at least 2 days office based per week. Travel to NHS sites across Lothian and the UK is also required. The use of the term “Senior” in this post refers only to the level of experience and responsibility required rather than age. As such, applications from people of all ages are welcomed, subject to meeting the relevant criteria.
