Job Description

The Industrial Hygienist (IH) serves as the university's subject matter expert in industrial hygiene and occupational health. Responsible for anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling workplace health hazards, this role ensures a safe environment across academic, research, facilities, and administrative operations. The IH develops and manages university-wide safety and compliance programs, collaborating with academic departments, research labs, facilities management, and regulatory agencies to protect faculty, staff, students, researchers, and campus visitors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program Management & Strategy: Develop, implement, and manage the university's industrial hygiene program across campus operations, maintenance activities, laboratories, and construction projects. Oversee equipment calibration, program metrics, and specialized consultant contracts.

  • Exposure Assessment & Monitoring: Conduct qualitative and quantitative exposure assessments for chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic hazards (including particulates, vapors, noise, heat stress, and indoor air quality). Interpret sampling data, maintain regulatory records, and issue technical reports with corrective actions.

  • Laboratory & Research Support: Provide technical consultation to principal investigators and lab personnel on hazard assessments, protocol reviews, and safe handling of hazardous materials. Perform annual laboratory inspections and collaborate with the Research Safety team to strengthen campus safety culture.

  • Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management: Maintain compliance with OSHA, EPA, CDC, NIH, and local regulations. Develop safety policies, lead workplace health investigations, determine root causes, and support emergency response and regulatory audits.

  • Training & Community Outreach: Design and deliver technical training on topics such as respiratory protection, hazard communication, hearing conservation, and exposure control. Provide guidance to supervisors, staff, students, and researchers across campus.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Environmental Health, Safety Sciences, Chemistry, Engineering, Public Health, or a closely related field.

  • Experience:

    • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible industrial hygiene experience.

    • Demonstrated experience conducting qualitative and quantitative exposure assessments and implementing occupational health programs.

    • Work experience within complex higher education, research, healthcare, or manufacturing environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education: Master's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Environmental Health, or a related discipline.

  • Certifications: Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or related professional credentials.

  • Experience:

    • Specialized industrial hygiene experience in academic or laboratory research settings.

    • Demonstrated experience managing asbestos, lead, mold, indoor air quality, and respiratory protection programs.
