Overview
Our client is a commercial and government contractor seeking an experienced Construction Estimator to join their team. This role is responsible for preparing detailed cost estimates for hard bids and negotiated projects, coordinating bid documentation, performing quantity take‑offs, qualifying subcontractor bids, and compiling complete cost proposals. The ideal candidate is highly detail‑oriented, organized, and experienced in construction estimating across a variety of project types.
Responsibilities- Procure, review, and distribute plans and specifications for upcoming bids.
- Perform quantity take-offs for general trades, materials, labor, and equipment.
- Prepare detailed and comprehensive cost estimates and bid proposals.
- Create scopes of work from bid documents and issue invitations to bid.
- Analyze subcontractor and supplier bids for completeness and compliance.
- Determine permit and licensing requirements relevant to each project.
- Perform conceptual and detailed estimating for hard bids, negotiated bids, and budgets.
- Mark up drawings and distribute bid documents to qualified subcontractors and suppliers.
- Ensure all project stakeholders have the most current documentation.
- Compile complete cost estimates for internal review and final submission to owners.
- Participate in pre‑bid site visits to assess existing conditions.
- Coordinate project information with Operations, Preconstruction, Project Management, and Accounting teams.
- Monitor project costs to ensure alignment with approved budgets.
- Review and analyze change orders; develop cost impact assessments.
- Maintain and improve change order tracking processes.
- Assist in developing departmental processes and standardizing bid formats.
- Review general conditions and assign risk factors for projects and job sites.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives within the estimating process.
- Develop and maintain estimating tools, cost references, and databases.
- Review monthly estimating budgets and expenditures.
- Assist in developing the estimating calendar and participate in communication workshops.
- Train and mentor new Estimators in estimating techniques and best practices.
- Contribute to team efforts and company objectives as needed.
- Minimum 7 years of construction experience (required).
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering, or related field (preferred).
- Demonstrated expertise in construction materials, building methodologies, and cost fluctuations.
- Strong understanding of commercial and/or government construction practices.
- Excellent verbal, written, and electronic communication skills.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
- Experience preparing budgets, cost estimates, and contract documentation.
- Ability to negotiate pricing with subcontractors and suppliers.
- Proficiency with construction management and estimating software.
- Ability to set and manage weekly and monthly schedules.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within cross‑functional teams.
- Familiarity with RFIs, RFPs, and change order management.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
