The Loogootee Times is a growing hyper-local news publication dedicated to serving the citizens of Martin County, Indiana. We pride ourselves on delivering timely community stories, regional coverage, and vital public records. As our coverage expands, we are seeking a meticulous Copy Editor to join our team and ensure our publishing standards remain accurate, fair, and airtight.

We are looking for a sharp, detail-oriented Copy Editor and Fact-Checker to serve as the final line of defense before publication. In this role, you will review local reporting, press releases, public records, and court news for AP Style, grammar, factual accuracy, and clarity.

• Proofreading & Editing: Edit 8–15 articles per week for grammar, spelling, punctuation, tone, and AP Style.
• Public Record Verification: Cross-reference court news, police logs, legal notices, and official documents against original public record source files to guarantee 100% accuracy in names, dates, charges, and dispositions.
• Fact-Checking: Verify key figures, local geography, proper nouns, and primary source quotes.
• Headline & Caption Polishing: Ensure headlines, subheads, and photo captions are engaging, accurate, and free of typos.
• Deadline Management: Work closely with the Head Editor on tight weekly publication deadlines.

Strong background in Journalism, English, Communications, or a related field (Students enrolled in degree programs are encouraged to apply).

Demonstrated mastery of standard English grammar and AP Style

Exceptional attention to detail—you catch the small typos, awkward phrasing, and misspelled names others miss.

High ethical standards regarding accuracy, fairness, and public record reporting.

Ability to meet strict weekly deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Knowledge of local history or geography in Martin County/Southern Indiana is a major plus but not required.
